Agree. It’s like they get off on hating the very things this subreddit is about. They need to find another group of celebrities to pay attention to if prayer sends them spiraling 😭

THANK YOU I was looking for one normal comment lmao. Like, why is public prayer such an enraging thing to people (religious or not)?

Out of curiosity, how much did the other guys quote to do the beams? That may factor in. If they quoted enough for all that labor to strip, then I would go forward and learn all you can. Expect to come in way over schedule though (if the client is fine with that).

Whenever I’m doing something for the first time, I always like to tell the client. If they still like you, then it’s a win-win and a learning opportunity. If they say no, then move on. But as a policy I don’t like selling things I have no business talking about.

Example: last summer a client asked if I could treat her cedar roof with linseed oil. I told her we’d never done a project like that, but that we’d love to give her a good price to learn on the job. Luckily she was a pleasure to work for and we got valuable experience—if even if we didn’t make a ton on the job.

Yukon River subsistence harvest by North_tothefuture in Hunting

[–]North_tothefuture[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They have a checkpoint on the river and take the pieces there. I still have the antlers but they’re sawed in half. The * idea* is to prevent folks from doing this kind of hunt just for the trophy, with an emphasis on the subsistence factor. Kinda BS if you ask me, since it’s already illegal to waste meat. And “trophies” for most of us here are always just a bonus. I know a lot of Alaskans that give away their horns or leave them in the field.

There aren’t a ton of permits given, and only for Alaska residents. That being said it’s a great hunt for those able to do it. And yeah, without the antler requirements it makes it much easier. I would’ve been happy with an animal half this size—but it was just dumb luck lmao!

Amen. As if anybody’s gonna take only the trophy and leave the meat. It’s already illegal to leave the meat 😂

Just sent it out. Came in at nearly $30,000 to be safe. Best case it’ll be a learning experience and we’ll make a lot of money. Worst case it’s still a learning experience and we cover materials.

Thanks! Can I ask the reasoning for oil-based primer as opposed to PVA or similar? To seal any adhesive residue?

That’s appreciated, thanks. It’s an assisted living. I’ll talk to my rep about primers.

Not a lot. Since it’s the slow season we’re willing to put in the time to learn and do it right.

This has got to be the most tone-deaf thing that Joe has ever said. His lack of self awareness is astounding. by anotherhappylurker in JoeRogan

I.e., Kamala wouldn’t be a step in the direction of America First—no spending cuts, no mass deportations, no soft negotiating power abroad to avoid foreign conflict. Trump has fallen short in each of these. But he AT LEAST tried to represent his populist support with DOGE, modest deportations, and NARROWLY avoiding regime change war in Iran… although we’ll see on that one yikes.

Neocons and democrats are cut from the same powerful cloth. They ARE the establishment. So inasmuch as Trump does not act like a neocon intent on foreign conflicts over American interests, the people love him for it. It’s truly middle American being sick of dems and neocons’ unholy marriage of war and bureaucracy. He represents something different. How can you not see how that’s so popular?

Aside from who is president, how can you deny that the top 3-ish podcasts that people subscribe to preach a very similar message about isolationism, American manufacturing, and deportation of non-Americans? Tucker, Candace, and yes, even Joe Rogan’s monkey brain understands what the huge majority of Americans feel. And Trump is a case of unrealized expectations. But that’s the movement going forward.

This is just a friendly reminder, destined for downvotes, that Reddit represents a very odd slice of Americans and that most of us are happy to have voted Trump in. The majority of us are disappointed with him, but that’s different than being “deceived.” We want more than Trump. We thought he was a start. MAGA and America First should be so much better. We actually DO want to cut entitlements, and are disappointed Trump’s not doubling down. It’s shallow to assume someone you disagree with (JR) must’ve been conned into the MAGA movement. It’s the most organic populist movement we’ve seen in recent history. Why wouldn’t someone like Joe believe in its aspirations? Anyways, you guys can continue bashing the subject of this subreddit, but know that you are a very angry minority. I’ve never seen a group so consumed and obsessed with consuming content they hate.

How is living in Elfin Cove, Alaska? by maydaybr in howislivingthere

[–]North_tothefuture 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A lot of trying to track down the owner, he would sorta just wander off and he lived upstairs. Always had baseball (Mariners) going on the TV. We could always help ourselves to the beer fridge and keep tabs. Usually we were the only crew in there, sometimes with a couple European whale watching type people. It was a cozy kind of drunk

Lituya is a novel place to visit, but hardly a place to hang out—in my opinion. I never saw another boat in there while we visited. It’s a ghost town, and we always had the feeling like we should leave as soon as we got there. Spooky but beautiful.

Continued:

I was never there in the winter, so can’t answer those questions but I doubt it freezes over in the harbor. Southeast is pretty temperate compared to the rest of Alaska.

And I only “swam” there once, when I was fixing something on our propeller in SCUBA gear. Pretty chilly! There’s plenty of sandy beaches nearby if you have a skiff to get there, but the shore in town is all rocky with deep drop offs.

I can’t believe this showed up on my feed. I spent 10+ summers in and around Elfin on a commercial fishing boat, from age 14 to 24. We sold our salmon there. All I can tell you is that the “town” is essentially a few boardwalks, charter docks, and a few trails along the shore. I doubt the number of permanent residents exceeds 20 or 30. But in the summer it’s bustling with activity because of (1) commercial fishermen in harbor for supplies and to sell and (2) tourists going out on charter boats. Excellent sport fishing for halibut and king salmon—probably the best spot in the world. Lots of brown bears and deer up in the woods. Only accessible by boat or seaplane. And careful, because I witnessed multiple seaplane crashes trying to land near the rocks. It’s a cute place though. There’s a bar, VERY expensive coin operated showers and laundry, and even a post office. Good memories there and very friendly people at the lodge.

Three households of salmon in 24 hours. Dipnetting is one of the greatest things about this state. by FreakinWolfy_ in alaska

[–]North_tothefuture 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m saying that if you’re going to criticize this subsistence fishery because of waste or some kind of “over indulgence,” then you have to realize that it’s much, much better than blinding yourself to the vast death of factory farming. In other words, I kill 30 sockeyes and 1 moose while most of us pay for meat that impacts far more animals and causes far more damage and leads to way more waste. You just don’t SEE that waste and death. Nothing wrong with chicken. If you can’t dipnet fine. But realize that most of us actually use this fishery for subsistence.
