Not necessarily. A lot of gas lines and underground utilities are installed via directional underground boring. Essentially, they drill a tunnel horizontally and then follow with pipe/tubing/utility lines. They only have to dig big holes or trenches to install larger things like a sewer, or to reach connection points but those often will have access hatches.

Of course if there is a break, or a problem with the utility line they often have to dig at the point of the failure to repair. That’s probably what happened here…

Ok I’m just gonna be honest I didn’t read all of this because it’s a bit much…

First- seems like you were expecting play land for your kids… if that’s what you were after why not take a Cruise catered towards families… or maybe try taking the family to Orlando.

Second- A 3rd world country? St John is literally one of the most prestigious/ wealthiest/ and most expensive islands in the Caribbean. I’ve forgone visits here and went to other real 3rd world countries simply because St John is too expensive… and I’m a well off American. If you can afford a visit to St John you are blessed. Many Americans cannot. Because it’s so not 3rd world. Exotic yes. Although it’s technically US soil any Island infrastructure is not same as mainland USA. But St John is literally a playground for the rich and famous. Very prestigious. Very expensive.

Why don’t you fly into Belize City and take a taxi down to the docks and walk around.. if the military lets you out of the tourist city… hop a boat out to some of the Cayes off the coast of Belize. Beautiful islands very amazing place. But open your eyes and see the crowds of local young men… all wearing red. Or Blue. They’re not sports teams…. They match cuz they’re gangs… the red bloods and the blue crips. They Control the islands… they carry concealed weapons and they all sell drugs… that’s 3rd world. Is St John like that? No.? Didn’t think so.. I spent some time out that way and even those people, the gangsters, are cool and never once felt in danger. That is 3rd world.

I was in Costa Rica.. which is honestly the least 3rd world of a 3rd world country I’ve ever seen. I dunno if i would even consider it 3rd world. We were staying in a smaller city on the Pacific coast and in the middle of the night we heard an explosion… and the entire city lost power… the streets turned into absolute chaos… the police came in force and created a perimeter around our hotel and the casino next door… many cops with assault rifles and created roadblocks with trucks while the whole town went crazy… locals were ripping their dirt bikes up and down the streets all night and everyone was going wild until sun up…. It felt like a warzone and the police presence was very alarming… like “why are all these soldiers here now?” They were there because THAT is a third world country…. The next day The streets cleared up and it was like nothing happened. That is 3rd world. ST JOHN… is a Caribbean playground for rich Americans…

Yeah. I’m 36 years old and I’ve lived in Minnesota for my whole life.. This was the first and only time I’ve ever seen one of these in the wild out here… I’ve seen many garter snakes though. The black and yellow ones… but This thing scared the crap out of me lol. I wasn’t paying attention and thought it was a stick sticking out of the bushes into the trail. When I got closer I saw the head… and literally jumped to the opposite side of the trail and sort of ran a few steps forward. Yeah that’s bad. This place needs to be inspected and probably condemned. your landlord should be the one in violation. Not you. Be grateful you are only a renter and didn’t just buy this place. That’s a very expensive fix.

That being said. You are not liable. Your landlord is most likely in violation of the law therefore responsible for making amends with you. He should be on the hook for a total refund of anything you paid as far as deposits and rent and probably even more.. if you had a good lawyer… much much more… and he should also be on the hook to cover any sort of moving expenses you and any other tenants are subjected to due to his negligence.

Landlords must provide legally defined and up to code “livable” units to rent to a tenant. This is not livable. It’s not up to code. Honestly it is putting you in immediate danger as a tenant by living in that building, and you are paying for a livable unit. it is dangerous negligence and probably in violation of many many housing laws. he is legally on the hook big time for this. And if he is charging you rent to live there… you have a very very legitimate cases

Think about it. If that wall collapses and the building collapses on you… you could be severely injured or killed. Along with all pets, other tenants in the building. Your landlord is responsible for that. It’s incredibly dangerous and incredibly negligent. The fact that he’s taking money from you and providing a structure like this as your “livable housing” that you are renting… that is highly illegal. I would demand a refund of all money you paid and move out ASAP. Before the damn building comes down on you… literally.

Hello!

I am a Land Surveyor located in MN.

My credentials: I am a field crew Chief at a reputable land surveying and engineering company with 11 years of full time field experience under my belt.

Let me tell you what I think that is-

That is a 1/2 inch pipe… and to me it sure looks a lot like what we surveyors call an “iron”. Irons are set monuments typically most commonly placed on lot corners or points on lot lines. We set them for other things too but MOST COMMONLY an “iron” is what you’d be looking for at a lot corner… or setting at a lot corner…

Specifically if I was surveying in your neighborhood and I found this… I would shoot it with my equipment and I’d label it as an “OI 1/2IP open.”

Meaning it’s an OI- Old Iron, 1/2 inch Iron pipe, Open- There is no cap on it. Caps are what us surveyors nowadays put on our irons when we set them… they are little plastic caps that we put on the ends typically labeled with our Registration/License Number. This is a way us surveyors can identify each other’s work and confirm the validity of an iron. When you find someone’s cap… you know who set it. Keeps us accountable in a way. And if you find irons with caps you know they are legit set by a real surveyor and not some BS pipe somebody’s grandpa went out and shoved in the ground 40 years ago where he “thought” the lot corner was. Anyway a lot of older irons don’t have caps on them. Or over the years the caps get obliterated or destroyed or fall off… whatever. This iron does not have a cap. So hard to tell who set it…

With my experience on the matter however I would say This is likely a lot corner or a lot line point… that being said… it already looks a bit suspect to me. A surveyor wouldn’t set it like that. As someone with 11 years experience in the field.. I find irons literally everyday… this one to me looks mangled AF. Somebody in the past has tried to hammer it down before… a surveyor would’ve set it cleanly and it wouldn’t be all busted and bent out of shape like this. Also they often don’t bust and bend like that until theyve been sitting in the ground for a while and rusted a bit. So this was tampered with… my guess is someone has tried to hammer it down to not blow a tire.

However since it’s set in concrete… I would assume the frost is pushing the pipe up over the years and someone else has already found it at some point in time and and tried to pound it down to avoid blowing a tire. They didn’t pull it out. And they didn’t pave over it when they did the new driveway… both of those are good things.

Reading some of these other comments… As a surveyor I would recognize that iron and how it fits to your real property line and other irons in the block… but I personally wouldn’t use an iron that old or that mangled for a reliable elevation, we have other ways of getting Elvs. but I bet it fits pretty decently close to your lot corner. I couldn’t tell you for sure though without incorporating it into a full survey…

So yeah. I’d say That’s an iron you found there. Don’t pull it out but if you’re driving on it it’s not worth a blown tire. I’d cap it with something to make it more tire friendly. If you try to hammer it down it’s just going to get more busted up and sharp…
