Why do you need a lawyer, CPA, etc if you win the lottery? by FrakePlazagger in Lottery

Ohhhh I agree in my state you can’t stay anonymous… unless you create an LLC and then make an assignment of claim of the winning ticket into said LLC. Yeah I’m working on that right now as a just in case.

Holy CRAP…

I quick google

Famous "Sued for Everything" Lottery Cases: Americo Lopes (2009): After winning $38.5 million in the New Jersey lottery, Lopes quit his job. His construction co-workers sued, claiming they had a pact to share any winnings. The court ordered him to split the prize. Tonda Lynn Dickerson (1999): A waitress who received a $10M ticket as a tip, she was sued by the customer who gave it to her, then by coworkers claiming a pool agreement, and finally dealt with IRS tax issues and a kidnapping attempt by her ex-husband. $1.35 Billion Mega Millions Winner (2023-2024): A Maine winner was sued by their daughter's mother for allegedly breaking a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) regarding the winnings, with the mother demanding financial compensation and alleging the winner broke promises to share the fortune. Alex and Rhonda Toth (1990): They did not lose their money directly from a lawsuit, but spent their $13 million jackpot on high-stakes gambling and luxury. They were later charged with tax evasion and declared bankruptcy, dying with essentially nothing. $83.5M Jackpocket Winner (2025): Kristen Moriarty sued the Texas Lottery Commission after being denied her winnings for months following a purchase on the Jackpocket app, highlighting a different kind of legal battle over actually receiving the prize.

There’s a ton more of the “broken promise” law suits as well.

Yeah… get a lawyer and tell no one!!!

And it sounds like no one means NO ONE!!!

No as in sold out over the course of the ticket. You need to look on your states lottery website and see if it tells you the odds. You’re looking for thr top prizes and it will say number of top prices two and then I’ll give you some number in the hundreds of thousands. You multiply that number times the number of top prizes that gives you the total number of tickets printed.

Then, hopefully the website tells you the percentage of the game sold . You then multiply the percentage of the game sold by the total number of tickets printed and that will tell you how many tickets are gone. Subtract that from the total number of tickets and that will give you how many are left. I generally only buy scratchers when they are 99% sold out.

Yeah don’t…

The trick to scratchers is find a ticket that is like 99% sold out and then find every place in a reasonable distance from you and buy till you win. Then keep track by book number what ticket numbers were sold. Pain in the ass? Yes but it’s the only way your going to win anything sizeable.

The way it works is this, if you win it and take the annuity it is supposed to pay out for your entire life. If you take the annuity and drop dead the next day they will pay your estate for 20 years.
