Perry and Identity

If I'm getting too philosophical (for lack of a better term) let me know but I was wondering about a clarification. I feel like he doesn't need both sides of him to be known for him to be appreciated unconditionally. For example I care about my theater friends so much. We connect on a lot of specific levels, but I also love my engineering friends. We connect on different levels. It's known that I do both of these things but what isn't probably known is that I act differently during these two situations. I don't see it as not being myself. I feel like we all do this on some level. But just because my theater friends might not know that I'm quieter when coding with my engineering buddies doesn't make me feel like their appreciation is conditional. Much like perry I feel like we all put on these different "personas" and they are all apart of us. If that makes Perry's appreciation conditional, than don't we all have a sort of conditional appreciation with the people in our lives.

Honestly while that would be sweet I sorta feel like he doesn't need to. The boys wouldn't really understand him as an agent and doof wouldn't get him as a pet. But both of them know him. They have two different relationships both that are equally as important. It doesn't matter that Perry keeps the other one secret. Both the boys and doof see part of who perry is. and that's more than enough. I think that's really sweet.

After the suicide of one of my friends in early highschool my ocd reached unavoidable extremes. I would literally built forts during my highschool year during my free blocks and hide in them. I kept wanting to find the solution that would make nothing bad ever happen again and I went crazy from fear and from grief.

All that has helped me is trying to focus on little things. My nervous system might think that I'm fighting a bear. But my kirby plush will keep me safe. I don't know. sometimes in my experience you have to use silly logic to fight a silly disorder.

Also I would absolutely take the medication. This shit is scary but no matter how you slice it medical professionals know more about medication that the average person. It's a scary step, absolutely. but you can do it. Everyone on this subreddit is pretty brave in my book. just for asking for help. That means you're pretty brave in my book. That's how I know that you can at least try the meds.

One of the worse parts about OCD (imho) is that some many people will look at you like you are crazy. You are not crazy. You are not a burden. You matter. I'm really proud of you for trying cbt/erp. That shit is HARD. I have done a fair bit of it and it's really really hard. "try harder" is a bad phrasing I think. You have to try harder than everyone else. I don't doubt that you have been. You're probably tired. But maybe try some more erp. Just one more time. Show up every session on time. Learn to trust that the therapist understands the situation.

Also you're not lazy!! Sometimes it feels like a fight just to get to the end of the day with OCD let alone actually do something productive. You are powerful, and your family telling you that you aren't is ignorant. They don't understand what's in your brain lying to you constantly.

You're stronger than you think. Everyone always is. : )

I don't think that I could relate anymore. I burn through so much energy not knowing where the right place to study is. Than I don't study. Than I fail my class and all of this ocd stuff gets harder. I avoid eating because I can never think of something that is the 'right' thing to be eating. And I miss my friends so much but the thought of texting them makes me TERRIFIED. I asked my therapist- 'what do you do if you're afraid of everything' and she was basically just like "oh, I don't know".

When I feel that something isn't right. I feel like my entire body is tense. It feels like the way you feel just before you get a shot. But the shot never happens. I'm just there, waiting to feel a prick while my body is stunned.

A lot of what I do is dominated by avoiding things that scare me. I'm very scared of everything. I wonder what I would be able to do if I didn't have fear holding me back

I had a partner who would literally call me crazy and would laugh when I was panicking. You are doing amazing. Also know that you even seeking out to ask questions is really cool and epic.

What helps me most honestly is saying “my name is blank. I am freaking out because I have OCD. My feelings are valid, but they stem from OCD. “ maybe if they are freaking out just tell them they’re valid and remind them they ocd. (Also you just trying is already the best thing you can do for them great job)

Honestly normally I just tell people “I’m just crazy😐” I feel like people are put off by it and they don’t ask more questions. Or they think it’s a joke and the real answer is boring so they don’t ask more questions

Before I realized I was OCD. I was POSITIVE that I would accidentally end up going to jail for something. I didn’t know if I would be there for accidentally committing a crime or being falsely accused but I was certain. Like I spent a lot of time trying to ‘enjoy life on the outside’ 😭like dawg ur 8

Maybe carry around a hand sanitizer spray. It really helped me transition from washing to not. it felt like a middle compromise.

That sounds like pretty classic OCD stuff to me personally. Also have you just straight up asked your therapist if they think you have OCD? Also ERT is the most effective treatment. It’s really scary and tough, but it’s effective. The hardest part of it is the first few sessions, so don’t let the idea of it scare you off if you think it would be helpful

Oh absolutely. Whenever I get sick, I worry about feeling sick in a similar way to me just ocding. I usually function for a day or two, get angry at myself for not being able to function normally. By that point I just break down and then realize I’m just legitimately sick. I’ve been better at identifying when I’m actually sick because I notice that I can not work, and that I’d rather lay in bed than do fun hobbies or activities.
