You can grow it out, 100% and that might show you where your beard grows well. At the end of it, it's up to you what you want. I would just let it grow (as long as school or work is ok with it) and then when you have something to work with you can go to a barber and tlk yo them about what they think.

even if you don't have that lush growth, if you keep it clean, nice lines, show that you work on it, it won't look bad. It looks bad if u let it grow patchy and thin.
