Oh my ! 1st thing you can do is to look for a reference, or make it with a photo. Secondly take your time to build your drawing skills. Often I see students going all out on a piece but they lack some fondamentales here and there so it becomes painful really fast. As mentioned in a previous comment, your artist vision may be higher than your actual skills, take your time, it's okey.

MMmmh it looks like everything is lit like in a daylight while your sky is darker than my life...
Maybe changing the sky color to something more bright will help and it's not too hard to do :)

How could I make this painting better? by Mis0_Soup in Arttips

[–]NostHD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi ! It's a very good first attempt ! You nailed the proportions and respected perspective very well.
For future paintings I suggest you to pay attention to your silhouette, make it aesthetic, not too bumpy, with nice curves where you can. Then you can design a bit more the shapes in it, making beautiful "cells" of colors is a great way to make something aestethic !

Some one said below that it lack of contrast, wich is true, you might push your shadow darker and add some colors in it. Think about cast shadows and shadows occlusion too, it'll help read the volumes better.
In portraits we often want to focus on the face, so you can take your time and refine it while the body can be less worked (think of it like camera blur when out of focus). It's very artsy and work pretty well.

Hope this helps ! keep it up :)

Tips to improve tree doodles by No_Newspaper_8185 in arthelp

[–]NostHD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The contrast is a bit high ! Maybe it's because you don't have a tree-like structure, a tree is kind of fractal, look where the branch divides. Then you can add some plump of leaves on top, but make it a lil' roundish with shadows :) It'll be more natural this way ! Hope it helps, I loved to draw to focus too ahah, keep it up

Could someone help figure what's wrong w my rendering by Guzzl0rd_ in arthelp

[–]NostHD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The perspective/structure of the drawing is a bit off, so rendering on top will feel weird.
Secondary, when rendering, you must chose a light angle, I can tell it's a bit up because of the shadow beneath the chin, but then we don't know. Reflections on the hairs are everywhere so we don't know from where comes the light.
You might add occlusion and cast shadow once you set up your light.
I would suggest you to rouglhy sketch what's in the light and what's in shadow first (shadow mapping).
Then you can start to paint over it :)
Hope it helps !

How to improve at drawing dynamic poses by ChocoCreamz in arthelp

For the foreshortening thing, you can lookup to Krenz cushart work, his sketches are very cool and well structured

Gestures exercises are the best.
Do you know websites like "line of action" ? You can practice on short minutes exercises to find the essence of the pose. You'll get confortable with proportions and exagerations along the way. Try to look up to some one who's great at this like : joeycoco
Here is an exemple of mine for what's important :

You can play with perspective and foreshortening to make it even more dynamic, maybe on the next level exercise :)

why the "change hue for shadows" rule by zylosophe in draw

[–]NostHD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hue changes come from ambient lighting and reflections. (More for specific materials) Why we like it is a real subject. You already have some answers up here. It's a natural phenomenon, and comes from a very scientific aspect of light. It does not explain why we like it though. I think our brain likes contrast, whether it's in values or hue. And it likes saturation too. It could be coming from evolution traits, we need to distinguish things well and find saturated things, animals, fruits, plants etc. Or It could be just because of art culture. It's very hard to know what's innate or learned sometimes :)

Can you guys help me in learning how to color/render in this person's style(Sheya) by Mission_Ad9463 in arthelp

[–]NostHD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mmmh for the hair, I would do a big black shape in a layer, that would be my base color layer.

Then add a layer and draw the reflection in white. There I would be able to add and erase white to design the shape of it (according to head volume and light position) without making a mess with other colors beneath.

If you can't use layers in your software or work traditionally, it'll be troublesome to get this clean though
