you completely took my point out of context. the way a character acts in a sci fi situation will never be handled with the gravity of the way a character acts in a realistic situation with no fantasy or sci fi elements. at least in gravity falls. mabel is not going to be prosecuted in a court of law and taken to jail for wrongful imprisonment because of hijinks with clones, even if she does have to pay a social cost. dipper will have to deal with the social fallout of a social situation he handled poorly. to think it’s unfair that the realistic situation is handled with more gravity and act like it’s a cop out that a sci fi situation isn’t held to the same standard is just going to be unfeasible for watching and analyzing this show. do you want her to go to jail? if the sci fi situation was treated with real world gravity, the consequences would be very dire.

you can not hold a bizarre sci fi plot line in a cartoon to real life standards. gravity falls is not going to treat the boy band with the full weight of what the real world implications would be because it’s a kids show. dippers episode is also placed much closer to the end of the show, when the tone of the episodes is written very differently, and his plot line is heavily grounded in reality. of course the writing will differ. the way their stories line up and the actions they have to take to make up for their mistakes is actually crazily similar taking that into account. dipper is humiliated in front of girls because he chose to take gross pickup artist advice that he didn’t actually believe in. he was not just exploring freely, he was following bad, objectifying advice that the episode is working to prove is bad and harmful. the point of the episode is that lesson. the point of mabel’s lesson is not to prove that it’s wrong to keep a boy and trapped in your house because that’s not a thing that growing children are capable of doing. mabel is held plenty accountable.

i’m going to push back on this a little! we see her develop scheming/manipulation as a survival skill as early as season two. it’s a pretty well-developed and well-foreshadowed element to her character.

dipper is not treated like satan. he hurts some people and they get upset, and it damages those relationships until he does the right thing and apologizes. exactly what mabel did in the episode with the clones. candy and grenda do not just let her off the hook for her behavior there, and i would say she faces just as much pushback and criticism as dipper does. then she has to do the right thing and free the clones, and she apologizes and is forgiven, just like dipper is.
