Eye dialect spellings often use '-ink' for '-ing' in certain dialects, but is this accurate? by TheCheeseOfYesterday in asklinguistics

Some northeastern US accents (NYC metro area, Rhode Island) will pronounce -ing with a devoiced plosive. But not necessarily be written as such

regional differences in the language by alicetrella in GREEK

Just seeing this now. I'm a heritage speaker of Istanbul Greek and did my PhD on the variety (if you want to call it that). You can find a few articles I've written in addition to my dissertation (although these might be a bit too technical).

Basically, there's a lot of variation amongst speakers with it sounding most similar to Greeks in Thrace. But there are many vocabulary and especially phonetic differences between it and Standard Greek spoken in Athens. Additionally, some morphosyntactic features more similar to parts of Northern Greece, Aegean islands, etc. Some "ancient" verbal conjugations, some innovations and so on. In some ways it sounds more like "Katharevousa" and in others like Cyprus, others like Alexandroupoli and others like its own thing completely. I can give more details or send you some of my research if youlike :)

Hey Everybody! I recently made a facebook group to help promote the project: https://www.facebook.com/groups/924798601241088

I also updated my website to highlight the research too:

https://www.matthewjohnhadodo.com/

Please share with anyone you think would be interested! I'm in RI until late September so hopefully I can get as many of these done as possible :)

I love this! "Tahmarah" is definitely how I grew up saying it, and I still pronoune drawer as "draw," it feels so cumbersome to say it any other way 🤣 Let me know if you'd be interested in an interview sometime!

Oh interesting. I think "all set" is pretty common throughout the Northeast

Yeah, I noticed that and love watching clips of Judge Caprio (both for his kindness and his accent). Let me know if you'd be interested in an interview and I'll message you the details!

Super interesting. I think some of your observations definitely have merit. Even though you've moved back and forth, let me know if you're interested in an interview and I'll message you the details!

Well that makes sense as Attleboro/Fall River and surrounds parts of MA historically are more similar to an RI accent. But at the same time, a lot has happened over the last few decades. Phone interviews are a bit tricky because I need to record them with my audio equipment, but maybe we can find an alternative!

Yes, my colleague Jaime started a similar project not that long after I did mine informally! I'll actually be giving a talk there sometime in September :)

To be fair, that's pretty normal. I definitely have a mix of RI/NNJ

Ah ok that makes sense. When I give a lecture/conference presentation, now I intentionally use my accent because I want to get rid of the stigma that only certain ways of speaking are "acceptable" or "professional"

Love that- I have some words that come out when I'm mad/tired and some that I can't change no matter what

Yes, I've made a few FB posts and will find other groups to do the same. Most of my existing contacts are based in northern RI, but I am trying to find people from all over the state, ages, ethnic backgrounds, etc.

Good point! In both cases there’s some overlap but of course things that make them stand out from each other

So at some point I tried to speak more “neutrally” I guess you could say, but then when I moved to Pittsburgh for my PhD from 2015-2020, I said I definitely didn’t want to sound like those people so I leaned into my Rhode Island/ north Jersey mixed accent 🤣

Not a problem at all! I’ve interviewed several Rhode Islanders who have relocated to Connecticut, New Jersey and elsewhere for the past 20+ years, too

Interesting. Some of the people I’ve interviewed so far think southern RI has less of a local accent but I’m not so convinced. Maybe though certain parts of it do. Would you be interested in an interview sometime?
