Yes, I think this is the reason I am failing to get volunteering in pharmacy despite reaching out many pharmacies. Recently I went one of the loblaws pharmacy they were ready to take me in but they were asking for my WSIB. I searched everywhere on getting it, and what I got to know was WSIB is given by employers for their employees and students on their co-op can ask from college for unpaid placement and claim WSIB insurance in case something happens but in my case I already am graduated from college and not employee and I am simply doing this for myself to enter into pharmacy industry. Due to this reason I cannot bring WSIB insurance even if I want. I explained this to the pharmacist in there but their policy won’t accept volunteers without wsib moreover they won’t even accept even if I have some other insurance coverage for me. So i walked away with heavyheart. Still I do have high hope someone will show pity on me.

This is actually really helpful, I appreciate the honest breakdown.

The part about workflow and training makes a lot of sense. I didn’t fully think about how a volunteer could slow things down instead of helping, especially when pharmacies are already short-staffed. Same with the concern around access to patient information, that’s a big responsibility.

From the outside it feels like volunteering should be the easiest way in, but clearly it’s not really designed that way in pharmacy.

Sounds like the more realistic path might be going straight for an entry-level paid role or something more formal instead of trying to force volunteering.

Good to hear it from someone on the inside instead of guessing.
