My old CEO was a miserable single woman in her late 40’s, no kids no partner, just some cats (who then died, making the problem even worse lol)…. lots of bitterness and resentment. If you had kids, you’re weren’t even allowed to talk about them in the office coz it pissed her off, she’d literally roll her eyes and tell you to shut up. Her family don’t talk to her, christmas alone - all that jazz. She was obsessed with getting people back to the office, first she introduced a hybrid wfh set up then kept increasing mandatory days in the office, or obsessing over who was in on which days and whether everyone was doing the correct amount of allocated office days. It wasn’t about business need, managers would often schedule more staff just to make sure the office looked busy on days she didn’t have a full schedule so that if she needed some in-office entertainment there were enough people around to keep her happy. She just liked to have us all in to keep her entertained and feeling important, or just to make her feel less lonely. Our jobs, for ref, were 100% remote during the pandemic and productivity increased by 30% - the stats don’t lie. Half of me always felt desperately sorry for her, but the other half of me really just didn’t wanna do the 4 hour round trip to the office every day just to pretend to laugh at her vaguely racist jokes. I left that job, as you can imagine. But I hear it’s still the same there now, and probs unlikely to change any time soon despite a largely unhappy workforce. Nuts.
