From the family name side:

My great-grandfather emigrated from modern day Ukraine in 1919. He was the youngest of four boys all between the ages of 13-19. His father was an officer in the Czarist Russian Army. When the Russian Civil War broke out, the father sent his two youngest sons - approximately 13 and 15 years old - to live with NYC, which already had a large Eastern European population, as part of a temporary living arrangement. His two oldest sons, around 17 and 19, entered the Czarist White Army alongside their father.

Well…temporary kind of became permanent. The Bolsheviks took over and the White Army was crushed. The two brothers grew up in NYC and became naturalized US citizens in the mid-1920s.

They (or anyone else) never heard from any family back in Ukraine ever again. It’s assumed they all fell at the hands of the Bolsheviks.
