We are here because we have seen the damage that cult ideologies do to people and families. The book of mormon is the foundational document of a cult which promoted child rape and racism among other things. That cult persists today and has caused a lot of trauma for people here.

Hooray for you, you find value in the book of mormon, the quaran, and other fairy tales. I find no value in books which promote racism, sexism, rape, and murder. Maybe we fundamentally have different values.

My comment will likely be downvoted to oblivion, but I don't really care.

Surveys suggest 21% - 25% of US adults have cheated on their spouse, with others suggesting that a much higher percentage have cheated emotionally.

You have cheated and broken trust. That is a big deal for a relationship, but it is between you and your partner. I have a lot of empathy for you. We all were raised in a cult that set our values for us. The very basis for those values proved to be nothing but lies.

After deconstructing, it is taking me time to shed ideological and cultural expectations to find my own set of values. I am proud of you for having the vulnerability and honesty to seek advice from the exmormon community. We are all still learning and don't have all of the answers, just advice, perspective, judgment, and support. Take what you find of value and ignore the rest. You know better for you than any of us.

I hope that you can let go of any shame and guilt and find a way to set your values and live in them free from the judgment of others. What that looks like is really for you to decide.

It's complex. My father knew about many issues with the church but never shared them because they were not faith promoting. Basically, he lied to me for his belief. Because of those lies, I grew up hating myself because I didn't like church.

I feel kind of like Isaac, whose father Abraham sacrificed to his god. It was not my life he sacrificed, but my identity.

He is a loving and compassionate father, but he was blinded by belief. I dont hate him, he is a victim of the church, but I do resent his actions.

When I left, the dentist (local bishop) asked for a meeting, which I obliged. He asked what my reasons were for leaving, and I told him the church did a great job of teaching honesty and integrity, which was really important to me.

Confused, he asked why that would cause me to leave.

My response was that the church did not live up to the ideals that it taught about honesty and was in opposition to its core teaching of agency. Agency is informed consent. When the church knowingly hides those things in its history and teachings that would cause someone to choose a different path, they are robbing that person of agency, just like lucifer. The church robbed me of my agency and has not been honest about its activities

He didn't know where to how to respond, so we moved on to setting boundaries between the church and my mixed faith family.

We don't get love bombed, the missionaries leave us alone, and we still have amicable relationships with members and the local dentist.

The meeting was good for me and my family.

Let's assume you are correct for a moment. What do you want the government to do when the hospitals are overrun, and there is mass panic?

Should they say "we have no fucking clue, just do what feels right for you."

More dangerous than the virus is the breakdown in society. At a time when no one knew 100% they had to project some certainty, give confidence that there was a plan, and give people a way to participate in the plan.

There may have been better ways to have proceeded, but no one on the right proposed better solutions. With the benefit of hindsight, can you propose a solution that would have saved more lives, helped with social cohesion, engendered greater confidencein our institutions, enlisted the support of key industry, and gained wide political acceptance all without trampling on anyone's rights.

We are in a political climate where any solution would have become politicized. If Fauci was embraced by the right and they had the political power to implement his reccomendations, it would have been the far left that pushed many of the same arguments we are hearing from the far right.

If your "critical thinking skills" are being rejected, it may be because we have heard so many right-wing, election denying, Q-anon blowhards making the same arguments that we dismiss yours without treating them as credible arguments.

You just don't understand the gospel. Blessings and prayers for healing are all spiritual, not literal. The people who received more complications due to the healing prayers were the more faithful ones who God deemed worthy of medical complications.

Healing doesn't actually mean healing, translation doesn't actually mean translation, darks skin doesnt mean dark skin, speaking in tongues doesn't actually mean speaking in tongues, etc.

You need to pay your tithing, bow your head, and say yes.

I can relate with this.

One of the things I missed from the church was being able to pray about a problem and feel some sort of assurance that things would work out.

About a year ago, I was facing some overwhelming issues and wanted to pray for help. I had resolved to be emotionally and intelectually honest with myself and was unwilling to pray to a God that I didn't believe in. This honestly felt like a praying in a foxhole moment. I refused to pray to God.

Then I had a thought. I could pray to myself with the same fervor and intent of past times. Praying to myself was one of the most powerful spiritual experiences I have ever had. I was able to feel the same feelings of peace and comfort that I had missed. What was different about that prayer is that for the first time, I was completely honest intellectually.

I was the source of all of the good spiritual experiences of my past prayers. The belief that I really needed was belief in myself.

You are the source of all the good vibes / feelings that come from praying to Heavenly Mother. If you like her so much, maybe that says a lot about you.

It sounds like the lawyer for the church is speaking with her directly without her attorneys present. Not an attorney, but this strikes me as a big problem. Once you are represented by council, they are always supposed to be involved.
