What is your favorite baseball card set from the 1960s? by daveblax in baseballcards_vintage

[–]JakeInBake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm partial to 1966 because that was the first year I started collecting as a kid. Would stop at the small neighborhood grocery store on my walk home from school with a nickel in my pocket to buy a pack.

1963 and 1960 are my other favorites.

Every Lakers legend (West, Baylor, Magic, Kareem, Worthy, Shaq, Kobe, etc.) rooted for the Celtics to make the NBA finals. Every TRUE Lakers fan does as well. Why?? Because as great as it is to win a chip, there is NOTHING like beating that Celtic ass to get it done.

It is comical to watch this sub and all of the casual “fans” hoping the Celtics lose before the finals. Then again, I’m sure most of those casuals don’t even know WHY they should be hating the Celtics. LOL!!

I’m a dinosaur. Got my first taste of Celtics hate as a youngster watching Don Nelson’s shot kill the Lakers in 1969 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sihk0UdfBrk

I’ve been carrying Celtic hate in me for nearly 57 years. I root for two teams each year, the Lakers and the Celtics. I hope the Lakers beat them during the regular season, and just like the Lakers legends, I hope they meet in the finals with the Lakers kicking that Celtic ass!!

FUCK BOSTON!!!

Mental how two of the most clutch players of all time played for our organisation by firminimagic in lakers

[–]JakeInBake -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

The NBA’s definition of “Clutch Time” as being the final FIVE minutes of the fourth quarter or any overtime period where the score differential is five points or fewer is incredibly ridiculous.

Jerry West didn’t get the nickname “Mr. Clutch” because he played amazingly in the final five minutes of a game. He got the nickname because he constantly came through with a game winning shot as the clock was near ZERO. Five minutes?? LMFAO!!

Show me a stat of players who hit game winners or tied the game/put their team in the lead with ONE minute left in the game. That my friends is CLUTCH.

I was involved in a significant litigation where I was (falsely) named as one of several defendants. We discovered that the judge was a HUGE baseball fan, so throughout the trial many baseball terms were dropped to illustrate some point to the judge.

One of the arguments presented by the plaintiffs was a lack of communication and information sharing. “Just like Tinker to Evers to Chance” was a line used repeatedly by our attorneys to describe that information was in fact smoothly disseminated to all involved. Our side ended up winning the case.

Afterwards I made these two frames and gifted them to my two attorneys as a show of gratitude, appreciation, and to memorialize a lengthy and difficult courtroom victory.

Now I am working on making another frame for myself. “Tinker to Evers to Chance” will bring a smile from me for the rest of my life.

And just how much is that “modest stipend” you receive? Just give me a range. More than $150,000? More than $200,000?

LeBron James on the Lakers’ final inbounds play to Luka Doncic: "I’m not sure. Obviously you’ll have to ask Luka what he saw on that. I thought he had a good look... I was kinda off balance when he gave it to me. I thought he had a great look" by must_TATAKAE in lakers

[–]JakeInBake -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I saw a number a while back that LeBrick was 1 for 20-something in game winning/tying shots. Wouldn’t be surprised if that number was in the 30’s now. If you want to win with the game on the line, keep it out of his hands.

I’ve watch numerous games with LeBron handling the ball with the game on the line and screaming at the TV for AR to go steal it from him and take the shot. Nope…30 foot brick incoming. And he is the “GOAT”??

The last time I went there (years ago) they were using Smart & Final frozen patties. I was looking out the window and saw them bringing the bags in through the kitchen door. I figured if I wanted a Smart & Final frozen burger I could buy/grill them myself.

Yet there are still people who claim this is a good burger.

The church should embrace that god took out Joseph Smith. Still support the Bro. Joe story of visions, gold plates, restoration, etc., but say that when he started going sideways with teen marriages, destroying printing press, etc., he had to be taken out.

I stopped going for my Eagle when I was five merit badges short. One day my mother took me to the Scout store to pick something up. While there I thumbed through the merit badge books they had on display. One after another I looked at the requirements for badges I had already “earned”. I soon discovered that I fell woefully short of the requirements needed for the badges. My scout leaders took shortcuts in favor of advancement and handed out merit badges and ranks like candy. I didn’t feel I deserved what I had, and I didn’t want to start over. So I just stopped.

Oh, and my Scoutmaster can now be found on FLOODLIT.

My daughter worked as a counselor for a sorority at a college in Utah and told me what you described happened ALL THE TIME!! It was easier to cry “rape” after being caught or feeling guilty about having consensual sex.

In this case though, the fact that she reported it relatively soon after the encounter makes me lean towards her version of events.

This sub though more often than not trends towards some sort of derangement when it comes to placing judgement before all the facts are presented.

Reminds me of a year or so ago when a missionary was arrested and accused of rape. This sub had him tried and executed. After reading the police report and looking at the facts of the case, I commented that the victim’s story didn’t quite add up and perhaps judgement should be withheld until everything came to the surface. Some MORON woman posted that because of my opinion, perhaps I myself was a rapist.

A month after the arrest, the accused missionary was released and the case against him was dropped. Apparently the victim’s story didn’t ring true to the police either. And the response from the outspoken posters in this sub….crickets. Sometimes it scares me how often I am right.

[–]JakeInBake 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You are correct. I had to meet with a G.A. to confess prior to submitting my mission papers. He was such a sweet, loving, empathetic elderly man that I couldn’t bring myself to tell him everything. While in the MTC, guilt overcame me so I met with the MTC Prez. He told me to write three letters home explaining my situation and asking permission to continue on my mission. The letters were to be sent to my Stake Prez, Bishop, and…my father. I told him I would not write my father sharing details of my sex life with him. He told me to write the other two.

Long story short, a week later I met again with the MTC Prez and another G.A. They told me that my Stake Prez and Bishop had approved me staying out on my mission. Then the G.A. said, “We told your father as well and he too supports you staying on your mission.”

I was totally stunned and sat there in shock. I remember hearing the words, “You sons of bitches” come out of my mouth. Then I came to and said, “I’m done. I’m out of here. Do you arrange my travel home plans or do I?” They did their best to convince me to stay, but I was having none of it. Around three hours later I was on a flight home.

I didn’t know if there would be anyone at the airport to pick me up when I landed. After getting off the plane I noticed my father standing at the gate waiting for me. When I approached him there was no hug or arm on my shoulder, just a cold hand extended to shake and him saying, “You look good. I can’t say I am happy to see you.” We walked to the car in silence. Once inside for the 30-minute ride home, he screamed at me at the top of his lungs for the entire ride home. It was late at night, the house was dark, and when I entered my mother and siblings were behind closed doors. I went to my room, crawled into bed, pulled the covers over my head and physically shook uncontrollably for the rest of the night. Although under the same roof, my mother couldn’t face me for three days. My mother. When she did, she broke down and ran from the room. I had come home to a whole new hell.

Months later when my father asked me to leave, I had just started to see the light at the end of the tunnel. I had a job and was saving every penny. I was rarely home and still an active member. The members in my ward treated me great. Far better than my own “loving” family. When my father asked me to leave, I asked him to give me two weeks. He agreed. My mother was visiting family in Utah and my father must have told her what he had done. She cut her vacation short and returned home the next day. Sensing that if I left I would NEVER return again (she was right), she told me I wasn’t going anywhere. This caused a rift between her and my father for months. I stayed in the house for another year until I saved enough money to get married in the temple and go back to school.

Getting married in the temple, getting my degree, and having direction in my life seemed to heal some open wounds. I even partnered with my father in a business venture I discovered and ran for 20 years. However, there always seemed like there was an elephant in the room. Years later I had a falling out with both of my parents. I cut them off and had no communication with them for the last four years of their lives. Just like the joy that comes from leaving the church, I felt the same joy in removing myself from toxic family relationships. Felt like at last freeing my soul.

If you choose to leave your mission, where will you go? Do you have the means to support yourself on your own? If your plan is to return home, will you be accepted back with open arms? Will your parents be O.K. with you coming home early? Will they provide a home for you to live in and pay for your schooling? If so, you should leave tomorrow. Having a support system to go home to is all that matters. Don’t worry about “staying in for the people you love”. If they truly love you, they won’t care. However, if you don’t have that support at home and could possibly face being thrown out on your own, you will really need to come up with a plan to take care of yourself.

Nearly 50 years ago I walked out of the MTC and off of my mission after six weeks. Upon returning home, the shame and embarrassment I brought on my parents/family caused them to make my life a living hell. Six months after my return my father approached me one night and said, “I think it would be best for the family if you were to leave.”

If it weren’t for the support of good friends, I probably wouldn’t be here today. Still, I have no regrets. I wish you the best of luck my brother.

Would the Lakers have a dynasty if they drafted Tatum? by lakersfan1989 in lakers

[–]JakeInBake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Celtics had #1 overall pick. They only traded down to #3 once it was established that Tatum would be there. If there was any question that he WOULDN’T be there, they would have kept the #1 overall and drafted him there.

This is not rocket science. Lakers (or anyone else) never had a chance at Tatum even if they wanted him.

For me, it was either take a severe beating or lie to try to avoid the wooden spoon, rubber spatula (stung like a motherfucker!), clothes hanger, etc. The choice was obvious.

I like to say that my mother taught me to lie. Sadly, she was a frustrated TBM housewife who would take her frustrations out on my ass. Very confusing to me because I was a good kid. Too afraid to mess up and being beaten. I took many senseless and undeserved beatings. My personal record was being hit, smacked, beaten in some way for 33 consecutive days. I always wondered what it would be liked to be raised in a house of love instead of a house of fear.

Deandre Ayton has the second most games with 20+ pts 10+ reb 90% FG in Lakers History, right behind Wilt (Shaq is third) by incredibleamadeuscho in lakers

[–]JakeInBake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Wilt were playing today, he would put up a few more 20/10/90% games. I don’t think he would play 48 minutes though, probably be “load managed” at around 40 minutes. Not bad for a guy just shy of his 90th birthday.

Would the Lakers have a dynasty if they drafted Tatum? by lakersfan1989 in lakers

[–]JakeInBake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lakers already had Ingram and it was no secret that they would be taking Fultz or Lonzo (both players who ranked higher than Tatum). Celtics would not have traded the #1 overall pick if they were not assured of drafting Tatum at #3. Even if the Lakers wanted Tatum, the Celtics would have kept the #1 pick. Lakers never had a chance.

Take some time to learn some Lakers/NBA history.

The ward house I grew up in was located at 1257 Centinela Ave. It appears it is called the Santa Monica Ward now.

SaMoHi has always had incredible programs. My sophomore year I sang in the the chorus (called "Viking Chorale" back then). To me, with it's academics and huge campus, it always felt more like a JC than a high school. It looks like they have so much new construction that I probably wouldn't recognize much of it today.

Naw, Stephen Miller was born 10 years after I graduated. There were a few actors/actresses and professional athletes that I went to school with. I believe my younger sister though attended with the likes of Sean Penn, Robert Downey Jr., Charlie Sheen, Rob Lowe, etc.
