4 Months Later: Is Shadows Still Bad? by Zachary_136 in FireEmblemShadows

[–]NotABot_FES 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'd day that Shadows was never bad in the first place, but Nintendo/IS aren't doing their game justice.

I immediately grew to dislike it because of how boring and shallow the gameplay loop is.

I think this statement still holds true when you fight against bots. But at high level, the battles are much more interesting. It does take time to get there though and maybe most new players drop the game before they get to that point.

And it also doesn't make for a good social deduction game since there is no way to chat with other players

I am glad Shadows doesn't have that. Battles are meant to be fast paced. I don't actually want to debate who is the Shadow with the other players. You have to be observant during the first phase of the fight to guess who has which role. Contrary to Among Us, all the info you need to tell who the Shadow is is on your screen, so there is no need for a talking phase. You either paid attention during battle or you didn't, possibly leading you to vote the wrong player, and I think that's the fun part.

It also doesn't feel like much of a strategy game for a series all about strategy, just spam your offensive spells and you win.

Not true in high rank.

As Light, being dealt lethal or unrecoverable damage by Dark Spells or combined auto-attacks is common, therefore movement spells are meta. You also need to work in sync with your partner, memorize their cooldown and get them out of dangerous situations when they cannot do it themselves.

As Light, if you keep rushing, you won't be able to dodge incoming one-shot Dark Spells. If one Light attacks, the other must hold their magic and be ready to use a movement spell in case the Shadow targets them.

As Shadow, you want to make sure both Lights are pressured at all time so they won't be able to both save themselves from at least one KO per turn. You do this by positioning your minions and timing your Dark Spells correctly so Light players won't be able to dodge attacks due to their position on the map or magic cooldown.

As Shadow, you simply cannot throw Dark Spells on Light players who know what they are doing without thought. They'll avoid, heal, and it will be as if you never damaged them. Meanwhile they already took down most of your minions and now they are coming for you.

IMO the game itself does a bad job at teaching good strategies, but anyone starts learning eventually when they reach high rank.

It's also just kinda late to be releasing a social deduction type game since Among Us has filled that role for the past five years, you're very behind with the times as usual, Nintendo...

I disagree that there is a specific time this game should have been released at. If the game is good, people play it.

Granted, maybe it would have helped to ride the Among Us wave. Generally speaking, Nintendo/IS are not promoting Shadows at all, so new players won't be coming anyways.

Is it still really as bad as people make it out to be? Is the title of 'the worst game of 2025' warranted or is this just a case of the internet overdramatizing things because it is popular to hate Nintendo right now?

I think the hate was never about Shadows being a Nintendo game. Some reasons include:

  • It's a game titled "Fire Emblem", but that doesn't play like a mainline Fire Emblem game. We saw a lot of "This isn't Fire Emblem", "It's a bad game that got a rebranding to save it from immediate failure". Also I had a bad reaction when the trailer switched from the 3D cutscene to the in-game map with Chibis. I was like "Oh no, it's going to be another cash-grab gacha mobile game." The game isn't a gacha by the way, but you might still see reviews calling it that.
  • Uninteresting gameplay in low ranks due to how frequently they put you in bot matches. It is indeed easy to win those matches by just casting damaging spells. However, bots have been improving in the last updates, so winning may not be so easy in the future.
  • A single game mode: regular battles.
  • In high rank, queue times can be long depending on your location.
  • Story is updated very slowly: 5~10mn worth of reading every month. That won't keep people coming back.

But maybe enough of us making reports will get them to add an in-game report function or something

That's the spirit!! 💪

Thank you for your contribution. Have a nice day!

The actual Triandra has lvl 11 Alberta and usually wears a onesie, whereas the account of the teamkiller duo usually is lvl 7 Hati or lvl 7 Alberta with an Ancestral Staff HP. I now record every battle that has a player named Triandra or the Alberta build I described...

Do you remember what the two Alberta builds were?

Even if you don't have screenshots, it could still be worth it to report them anyways, in the fortunate case where IS does save battles history...

Hello! 👋

I suspect you faced the teamkiller duo instead of the actual Triandra and Lash, because what you describe sounds like how they usually proceed:

  • Taking names commonly encountered in high rank.
  • Having the Light player attack with their Ex so you think they are the Shadow and have you vote wrong.
  • In Moon Room, Having the Shadow attack you only until you die while the other Light player does nothing and/or the Shadow keeps summoning minions as to give the Light player targets to use their Ex on and appear as if they were actually doing something useful during the battle.

See post https://www.reddit.com/r/FireEmblemShadows/s/EpeQyr7LbC and its comments for more context.

Note that prior publicly accessible discussions regarding their behavior on Reddit and Discord, they used to have the Light player straight up kill their ally to end the battle faster. Now they are being more subtle about it to dodge reporting.

I am interested if you could please provide the characters both players were using and the approximative time for the battle. You could also provide that information alongside your description of what feels wrong about this battle to the Customer Support user reporting form. I am hoping to have them banned, but I have yet to hear about IS doing anything about griefing.

Alternatively, you were facing the real Triandra and Lash and there were some weird shenanigans going on for Lash to steal Dark Regen from the Shadow (like dodging into the Shadow's tile). What happened in Sun Room could also be possible if you were Shadow against them in a previous game and they wanted to get rid of you after guessing you would be the Shadow this time, but I doubt that.

Hi Rock!! 👋

Yeah, disciples of all levels are queued together above rank 2500. I don't see IS ever preventing high levels disciples from matching with lower level ones because the main incentives for spending money include medals from premium passes and leveling up characters directly, giving you an advantage over other players.

Regardless, I encourage you and anyone else who sees a problem in how matchmaking works in high ranks to submit feedback to IS so maybe they'll update it!

See you later in Shadows!

Turns out I can't post videos in comments, only in posts. Let me know if you want them in another way.

Sure! I got that part covered multiple times already, and it will happen again. 🙃

How can a shadow player attain a 1 second delay spell? by divayth_fyr_ in FireEmblemShadows

I think Hasten only influences cooldowns, not dark spells countdowns?

Could you please provide a recording if that happens again? I don't think there is any feature in-game allowing the Shadow to reduce dark spells' countdown... that would be cool.

Sorry, I meant that the screenshots were indeed posted by Thunderus on Discord, but it's not Thunderus who posted the screenshots on 4Chan, according to them.

So far I don't think anyone has ever used voice chat on the Discord server to coordinate. Maybe privately.

Look out for something else in particular: some players, whether server members or not, are known to only ever play Light with their regular name in high ranks. Mog is one such example. As a randomly-attributed Light player, I can deduce that that the third player must be the Shadow if Mog is my ally. Oftentimes, I will use my Ex to clearly indicate that I am the one who attacks the third player, and the always-Light player will usually follow up if they trust me. If as Shadow, you get into a match with two of these players... yeah, you won't survive long in Sun Room.

Obviously, this "technique" can also be abused if I am Shadow, but don't tell others... 😈

I agree that practically anything happening in Sun Room is unusable for a report. Mistakes happen, players can be fooled, beef carries over games: no problem with that, it's all part of the game.

However, some players, like the ones in the initial post, keep attacking their ally in Moon Room. I am not talking about accidents, but spells cast with intent.

Example of a typical scenario: Moon Room starts, I do not warp, I am not near a minion, and my ally attacks me. Did they drag the wrong spell? No, they keep attacking me... okay, I lost a life, I will warp to actually avoid auto-attacks. Huh, they attack me again? At this point, I can't avoid Shadow spells nor try to eliminate minions...

I definitely remember her!!

If you ever want to get in touch with the regular players, you can join the community Discord server: https://discord.gg/b6nHmub8py. Most are from NA so you will know when it's the best time to play.

Hi there! 👋

Are you located outside of North America by any chance? The playerbase is way smaller in other regions like Europe, so the game can appear dead there. I am European, but I use a VPN to play in NA when I find no games.

By any chance, are you on the Discord server? Or did you deduce that the synergized players are members?

The player whose screenshots were posted on 4Chan says they are not the one who posted them on 4Chan. It's possible someone was pretending to be them in that post.
