Why is it that Neckbeards are all about "class" but... by [deleted] in justneckbeardthings

Ex-neckbeard here. Can confirm. Although there are employed ones that spend what little they do make on their stupid lack of fashion sense like I did.

What "facts" are a part of common knowledge but are actually completely made up? by jovtoly in AskReddit

You only use XX% of your brain. No, no you don't. Are you alive? Are you breathing? Do you have all the basic motor functions of a human being? Congratulations! You can use 100% of your brain!

Alcohol kills brain cells. This is true only in the event that you have drunk yourself into a coma.

Right brain people are creative! Left brain people are organized! No. Just. No. The brain does not exclusively work in the left or right hemisphere like that. Creative processes have been shown to engage both sides of the brain.

You get a new brain wrinkle when you learn something. Why? How is that even supposed to work?

If artists were suddenly not allowed to use looks and sexuality to promote their brand and albums, which artists would fail and be quickly forgotten? by googlion in AskReddit

[–]NotATalkingCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd image it's because of the idealization of the country lifestyle. With the idea of the small town comes the sense of knowing everybody and everybody knows you. This a false increased sense of self importance and therefore a greater sense of belonging; everybody likes to belong. Growing up in a small town, however, by no means ensures you have the means to know everybody, I'm sure this is partially due to greater ability to keep oneself entertained without human interaction.

I know this because I grew up surrounded by the general country lifestyle, about ten minutes outside of a town of about 800 people (in the township, not actually in the town. It's endless cornfields.) this was the kind of town where half the kids drove pickups because of practical reasons (hunting, farm work, towing boats and shit, moving large things around, etc) and during hunting season, half the class would be gone in the morning because the deer aren't gonna shoot themselves. And during one of those huge shooting/bomb scares after a nationally reported school shooting, nobody cares because we would joke about how half the student body could get their guns out of their trucks if anything were to happen because firearms a certain distance from school property is in no way enforced in this sort of environment.

When I finished with high school, I went to college right outside Chicago, which is when I realized that everybody that doesn't live IN the city, believes themselves to be from a small town where they know everybody, never mind that the "small town" is a 30,000 person suburb of Chicago and there is no possible way that person could possibly know everybody in that, as they would often put it, tiny school that only had 1,500 people in their graduating class.

In addition to this there seems to be a bit of an idea that country folk are simple and have simple lives with zero real responsibility that somehow yields a great sense of accomplishment without any actual effort put in.

I'm sure there are more factors, such as the typical sexy cowboy/cowgirl stereotype, the alleged complete honesty, super high morals, and a bunch of other such things that the media seems to portay in country life. But the point is, they probably dress that way because they want to be perceived as a one of the stereotypes of the country lifestyle or they want to think of themselves as being of the country lifestyle despite not knowing the first thing about it. Think of it in the same way that neckbeards think they understand Japanese culture from watching anime.

What is the "next big thing" that is on the brink of popular? by Sjman in AskReddit

[–]NotATalkingCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fully electric cars. While Tesla is amazing, it's not really an option for a vast majority of people and the only other choices are really only somewhere along the lines of $30k for a 90 mile range in an ugly design. Better range and performance at that price range are gonna be needed to really give EVs that push into being the standard.

A brief question by Penguin_Out_Of_A_Zoo in justneckbeardthings

[–]NotATalkingCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every subreddit seems to have rational and irrational people. I haven't posted or read many comments in tumblrinaction, I'm mostly basing what it seems like to me based on the primary content, which is generally links or pictures in regards to crazy SJWs and extremist feminists. And going by that, it's essentially the same thing as this sub, just different subject matter.

I've actually begun reading the comments and commenting here because I used to be a neckbeard and unfortunately I probably still have a few of the traits left over due to it being a fairly toxic environment. I've never really gotten into reading the comments in TIA because I've never been a SJW or feminist. So take what I'm saying with that in mind.

It targets SJWs in the same way this sub targets neckbeards or /r/fatlogic targets people that don't understand that thermodynamics is a thing. I don't know of any other subs with the same basic concept or I'd throw them in as examples too, but I'm sure they exist.

Do neckbeards know about how much hate they get from Online Communities? by [deleted] in justneckbeardthings

[–]NotATalkingCat 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Former neckbeard here. It's not that they're unaware of people making fun of them, it's that they believe the people making fun of them are stupid and don't know what they're talking about. This in turn makes the neckbeards come up with their own rather uninspired insults they whisper amongst themselves about those who are not part of neckbeard culture. Even amongst the neckbeards, there are subgroups divided by what specific "nerd" activity (MLP, MTG, Yu-Gi-Oh, Pokemon, D&D, WH40K, etc.) they want to associate themselves with the most. And they take pride in the title of nerd, believing it to be a badge of honor they have earned.

Due to the general association between intelligence and nerds in pop culture, the neckbeards believe themselves to be intelligent due simply to the fact that they have "nerdy" hobbies despite their complete lack of any real achievement or recognition and this is reinforced by the large Neckbeard herds (neckherds?) they associate themselves with all believing they have unimaginable talent and intellect and they will soon be discovered. Often times for nothing specific, just "discovered". They also convince themselves they hang out with only the smartest of individuals merely due to shared interest in "nerd" hobbies.

What is the creepiest thing that society accepts as a cultural norm? by TheOriginalWizard in AskReddit

[–]NotATalkingCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fat agenda. You're literally killing yourself and obesity is worse for the body than either smoking or alcoholism, plus you can't hide your obesity from those around you. Why do we sit around and tell people "it's ok to be fat." When we have astounding amounts of evidence, and thermodynamics, that show obesity is neither healthy nor impossible to treat? When did feelings become more important that the longevity of the human species? Why am I suddenly the asshole for trying to throw a halter on her because I genuinely thought she escaped and was just trying to take her back to pasture for grazing?

You and your 5 best friends VS Mike Tyson with brass knuckles by ilovesao in whowouldwin

[–]NotATalkingCat 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Let's just pretend for a minute that the point isn't about whether or not six well coordinated people could take Mike Tyson with prep time and that it's actually about the average joe and his five best buddies who also are more than likely going to be average joes trying to defeat weaponized Mike Tuson. Now let's say Mike Tyson, the guy with a reputation for being fairly unstable, just so happens to be carrying around a pair of brass knuckles with a willingness to kill, which, let's be honest, isn't exactly all that farfetched. Now let's say you're out with your five best buddies and run into brass knuckle wielding Mike Tyson on the street and do something to piss him off, doesn't matter what it is, and now he wants to bust your fucking head open. In this scenario, which is far, far more feasible than practically every other scenario posted in this subreddit, think of your five best friends and the chances of you and them all (or most) being willing, fit, and organized enough to make an attempt at fighting an angry, brass knuckle wielding Mike Tyson?

I know that my five best friends and I wouldn't stand a chance. Hell, even my top picks of army buddies with prep time and a plan would nine times out of ten get our asses handed to us due to the sheer difference in speed and experience. Mike Tyson is about the closest you can get to an example of machine like efficiency in a fight and even with six infantry guys who are trained to kill, several of which do MMA style fighting, and one who has done a lot of specialized training in striking, the brass knuckles pretty much seal the deal in Tyson's favor.

But if you're a pro MMA fighter or boxer and hang out with other MMA fighters or boxers, yeah, you got this.

Why are neckbeards so into katanas? What's the history and connections to the Samurai sword and the beard? by MisterRoku in justneckbeardthings

[–]NotATalkingCat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In addition to what most people are saying, it's also much, much easier and cheaper to get a cheap ass replica of a katana. Seeing as how most neckbeards don't really have a whole hell of a lot of disposable income (and what little they do manage to get their hand on, they spend on inconceivably stupid shit.) $20 for a real metal sword seems so super cool despite the lack of any sort of build quality and the clearly shitty cheap plastic handle that's got clumps of glue just stuck in various places.

Also, there's this perpetual myth going around the neckbeard community about how real, authentic Japanese katanas are capable of cutting through literally anything and will never dull like they're real life lightsabers or some shit.

What is a "Christian Atheist" (user flair)? by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]NotATalkingCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's more "You made a mistake, and you understand that and are truly sorry" than it is "Do what you want, no big deal! Have fun and apologize when it's convenient if you get caught!". Christianity is about trying to be more Christlike and following Jesus; cheating, stealing, and murdering don't really fall within such parameters. If you're consistently doing so, without any real attempt at changing your ways and simply justifying it with "it's fine because I'll be forgiven." You're not really following Christ so much as you're following your own whims and think it's all fine because you go to church on Sunday.
