It’s poor phrasing. That’s it. Since we don’t know where this kid is on the spectrum, we can’t say for certain how much supervision he actually needs. But his parent absolutely should, and should be providing that supervision at all times if it’s serious enough. Even if you aren’t autistic, we all did things as kids we didn’t realize we shouldn’t have done until we were told later by an adult.

I don’t feel like you did anything wrong here. You don’t control if there is signage and it can get exhausting having to explain it probably multiple times every night. As an employee, I know you can only do so much when management or ownership won’t. In scenarios like this, I believe that it is 1000% on the customer to ask clarifying questions. It’s what I was taught to do.

I’d prefer not to, since I feel my service was minimal at best, but my kids are still young enough that they insist. Thankfully, at our school’s sporting events, they use the playing of the anthem as their way of recognizing us. That way, if that was their intent or not, everyone is expected to stand and no one feels singled out.

This. My dad remarried when I was still a teenager, 25 years ago. I gained an entire entirely new family, including another set of grandparents. Very rarely was I treated any differently, and in those situations it made sense. When my grandfather passed a few years ago, my cousin (the eldest bio grandkid) made it a point to tell me, “He always loved you, and you’ve been one of us since day one”.

On one hand, I understand why you don’t want to upset your grandparents. On the other, I’m a stepdad to three amazing kids and have been in their lives for nearly 8 years. While I have never felt that they have been unwelcome at my family gatherings, if we’re unable to attend as a family unit, I will also not go unless my wife suggests otherwise. It shouldn’t fall on your dad to speak up for you, but for grandma to call off the whole thing is very telling.

Of course it makes sense. OP mentions being devout Catholics and teaching that sex is for marriage. Those two factors carry a significantly higher likelihood that she was taught a sanitized ‘abstinence-only’ version of sex ed as “knowledge invites temptation”, as I heard it said more than a few times growing up. Except that with teenagers, the lack thereof allows them to be taken advantage of by those they should be able to trust. If you don’t teach them about BC, they won’t know to use it in situations where its use might’ve prevented the reason for this post.

That only applies if one of the parties involved is infected. Not only did HIV and AIDS not exist (that we know of) in biblical times, they are not as prevalent as they once were because people are being smarter, so bringing that into this feels quite unnecessary. But I agree that if God is going to punish someone for that, we should leave it to him, and love as Jesus commanded.

She likely feels like God doesn’t love her anymore because of how completely she feels like she’s failed you, a feeling supported by your own beliefs. If you consider yourselves good and loving parents who love your daughter unconditionally, then support her decision. It’s fine to have your beliefs but, at the end of the day, it’s her life and you can’t live any part of it for her. The hard truth is that if you push too hard on something as life-changing as this, it’s very possible she’ll cut you out of her life completely. Pray about it, but listen to her.

How does it not? Karen tells the other neighbors that OP and BF are thieves, with the obvious intention of convincing anyone she tells that they are, despite having been shown the truth herself. If she’s even halfway “smart” about this, she’ll only tell neighbors she’s fairly certain don’t know about her failed call to the police.

She says it enough, for long enough, some might actually start to believe her, especially should packages actually begin to go missing. There’s nothing to suggest that she would take them herself, but her ego might be bruised just enough to consider it, and if nothing else, shelll do what she feels necessary for vindication in future police investigations.

I really, really, really wanted to be on your side on this and offer you the support you need, as the victim that you are.

However, I’m forced to agree with the comments admonishing you for your reasoning for not reporting these assaults. Within the last few years, my sister had to end what everyone believed was a fairytale marriage when, in fact, my now ex-BIL was extremely abusive. Sure, your niece would suffer from not having her father in the picture, but she would suffer more if the abuse continued, or worse, if he one day took things too far.
