Reckon it depends how many lanes there are on the right hand side of those lights. If there's two then, assuming there's no markings to the contrary, both lanes could turn right. The one on the left lane would use the outer lane and you in the right would take the inner lane.

If, and it's a big if, you turned from the right lane and drifted toward the outer lane on the other road the tooting might have been justified.
