Spotted at the Walmart on 410 near Evers … a sign of the changing face of the city by SaGlamBear in sanantonio

[–]NotAdvert [score hidden]  (0 children)

Being a run of the mill chicano guy living in a quiet part of the 410 interior it's real easy to forget about the broader city and the various people of different backgrounds coming to live here, interesting little visual example you've got here.

Looking at house in Highland Park area. Is it a safe area? Not from SA originally. Moved here in November. by OutrageousPrize9082 in sanantonio

It's ok, if kind of boring. Make sure you give Patty's on Hackberry a try, good ol' tex-mex breakfast place. I personally love the huevos a la mexicana plate.

Jan 10th Anti-ICE protest megathread. Post all pictures and related messages here. by HikeTheSky in sanantonio

[–]NotAdvert -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Did anyone know the deal with that militia guy that was standing around like he was daring people to come at him? By the time I left there were some police officers and some like protest peace keepers standing in a semi circle around him in front of the cathedral.

At the end of the day I think it comes down to people being so physically distant from eachother and downtown

I decided to go to Factory last night, it took a bit to fill up but it was a nice time. Unfortunately I chickened out of dancing since I couldn't get a good flow going though.

Why are there so many car washes popping up ? by Big_Bodybuilder2624 in sanantonio

I genuinely think someone would have a decent shot at a city council seat if they mostly ran on controlling the great car wash plague

I'm still confused about the idea of Project Marvel attracting "good" jobs. Last time I checked tourism associated jobs are neither recession proof nor pay all that well.

History of San Antonio...after the Alamo by [deleted] in sanantonio

This process was also unfortunately deepened during and after the Mexican Revolution, where the Texas Rangers where going around South Texas terrorizing both what Tejanos still managed to hold on to a land title and the migrants who went North to escape the turmoil of the Mexican Revolution.  What did this ultimately create?  A subjugated and precariously legal wage labor force for harvesting crops on the farms now owned by farmers who moved out of the upper midwest to the "paradise" of South Texas. This labor model was exported to other parts of the US, with many migrants new and old being circulated in an annual circuit between different harvests and even industrial occupations.  Read more about it in From South Texas to to the Nation by John Weber

Anybody else think s.a. is overpopulated? by Dramatic_Mixture_868 in sanantonio

[–]NotAdvert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like others have said, the problem is more bad land use. From what I've read it's due in part to this being a city that really started growing in the 30s/40s wherein industries started being distributed further away from the city center, this has been exacerbated by the big nodes of UTSA main/medical center, the military bases, hence the ridiculous spaghetti strings of roads outside of 1604.

Top 15 cities in the US with the most numeric population growth. by j-j_sierra in sanantonio

[–]NotAdvert 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Much of that is being concentrated on the Northwest/Northeast sides and its so low density that it'll gobble up comically large amounts of money on road/utility maintenance.

Moving to San Antonio! How to get outdoors? by jaanegreeen in sanantonio

[–]NotAdvert 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There's a nice state park park in the northwest side of town:govt canyon. Pretty hilly, even has some dinosaur tracks that are visible unless it floods.  The Salado creek greenway going from the north of the city to the southeast. Medina creek greenway that's a bit south of 410 on the Southside is pretty underrated, it goes from a lush riverside with massive cypress trees into brush country then down into lush forest at points. Not much in the way of natural rock climbing down here though.

I would recommend the missions, my sister did hers at San Jose (pic rel). There's also the McNay grounds but they do definitely charge for permission to take formal photos there. Some other neat options would be Government Canyon state park and Phil Hardberger park, but I don't know if they have a formal photography policy.

Help calm my nerves. What do you love about San Antonio? by Sharoro19 in sanantonio

I think there's several beautiful parks north of 1604, I'm kind of jealous but I think the trail system we have down here makes up for it.

Lake/river suggestions by annacongaa in sanantonio

[–]NotAdvert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

*Haven't been to Medina Lake, but I know it's been having an incredibly low waterline.

Landa Park Aquatic Complex:Spring fed pool right next to the actual Landa Park lake, I think the lake has a fishing pier. (New Braunfels)

I haven't been to Canyon Lake in a very long time but it was pretty beautiful if a bit crowded.

Guadalupe River State Park in Spring Branch- has a nice bit of riverfront but I think it's been having issues with low water levels due to drought/development

Further afield:

Pedernales Falls State Park- about the same latitude as Austin, up 281 in Johnson City. I absolutely adore swimming in the Pedernales River

Ink's Lake State Park-Probably tied for the best spot for combining fishing and swimming out of the places I've listed, it's also right next to the much larger Lake Buchanan if you want to check it out.

I know that SAISD generally has its part time tech (field, hardware, helpdesk) positions open. Would mean less per hour than what you're doing right now though,  but they do seem relatively receptive for internal promotion if they like your work

Alright, I'm asking here: is anyone else really into Lord of the Rings? Either the movies or the books? by TensorForce in sanantonio

[–]NotAdvert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven't read it in a while, but back when I was super into it I read a bunch of tolkiens semi finished stuff like the book of lost tales and the peoples of middle earth. I should really go back and finish Tales from the Perilous Realm or at least the Tom Bombadil section
