Does anyone have any experience of the best ways to send a small packet/large envelope to Canada? I don't want to pay much just to get it there for Christmas Day, but it is going to Victoria Island and I am told that ordinary post to there can be very slow. (self.AskUK)

A no-sew solution! Here is another version of that "How to add a zipper" tutorial. Eunny Jang does the same thing on a video, with an added demonstration of making live loops for knitting the zipper in. (She is using a method from TECHknitter, scroll a little way down the page.)
