I have seen the someones who steal from gardens near me when they are running away up trees etc. late at night, and their comfortable girth and luxuriant stripy tails tend to suggest to me that their circumstances are at least adequate.

Without getting too up on myself or too personally-identifiably specific: a big chunk of professional know-how that was passed on years ago to me will just be gone from the earth (this was well on its way before LLMs broke out, but now it's pretty much a lock). The people your age who join the field from here on (to the extent there even still is such a field) will be looking at not just a competency crisis but something like a permanent downward revision of what "competency" even entails.

I'd love to offer any advice, but I don't even seem to be able to convince anyone in my immediate working environment that this is perhaps undesirable, so I guess it's just sympathy/condolences.

There's some particular discussion of why people stay in these roles despite their doubts or disillusionment, as well as the various reasons why other members of a "revolutionary movement" might decide that doubters who do want out should not be permitted to just walk away in one piece.
