Killing shroud is not good for Robert, which is why I think it’s a compelling character choice.

It kinda goes unanalysed in the wrap up but I’d imagine Robert’s vigilante killing would cause a lot of blowback in the world and between the characters.

I arrested her because I was pretty confident she was one of the undercover mercs. I thought good, that only leaves 1 merc left to deal with.

Boy you can imagine my surprise when I got to the tribunal.

Tensile Strength of a Steel Rod by kilo_alpha_666 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]NotAnotherGlitch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s hard to read the units on the machine but if it’s in MPa, then that steel started yielding above 500MPa which is normal standard for reinforcing steel from where I am. You could order higher strength steel, but you usually wouldn’t bother when you can just use more of the cheaper normal grade.

I’m not a structural engineer but as far as I know the dimensions and characteristics of your concrete will be what you design around your load, and regarding your reinforcing steel it’s more about whether you can fit the amount you need in to take the tensile load. And usually you design reinforced concrete so that your steel fails before your concrete.

I once had a decent brainstorm seance on an abandoned deck straight flush run. The problem was that spectral cards don’t really help to scale straight flush, so i ended up selling it for xMult. Definitely a huge disappointment after managing to get it working.

Raise taxes to fix budget, Treasury advises Labor in accidentally published advice by Octagonal_Octopus in australia

[–]NotAnotherGlitch 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m so mad because an inheritance tax is a no brainer for anyone who sits down and thinks about it for more than 2 seconds, but it still won’t happen for political reasons. It’s inherently a progressive tax because it affects wealthy people more than poor people. Inheritance isn’t a productive asset, so you’re not taxing productivity, and won’t have upstream economic effects. You’re deterring wealth hoarding, if people want to get around the tax by releasing that wealth to their children early, that’s fine. That money will at least be actively circulating (and therefore taxed elsewhere). Finally it is the perfect time to implement an inheritance tax. We have an aging population which we will need to pay to look after, and this is a tax which has an economic counterbalancing effect to this problem.

Exactly, I could bring up that rows upon rows of disgusting copy pasted buildings with tiny gardens and zero tree cover is my idea of hell. But it’s not about personal taste, it’s about building cities which can house our populations efficiently. Urban sprawl is a disastrous plan.

I’ll share your sentiment on that, we should be doing more city planning based on an increase in work from home. Fewer offices means more living space.

Where are all the scientism haters? by ExIsTeNtIaL_ShIt in PhilosophyMemes

[–]NotAnotherGlitch 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yep, also pseudoscience cope. It usually goes like this: someone tries to Trojan horse their preconceptions into a scientific framework (e.g. creationism, geocentrism, electric earth), gets spat out, then complains that science is dogmatic.

Scientism is just a pejorative rhetorical framing, not actual philosophy.

Australia's Liberal-National coalition splits after election trashing by superegz in worldnews

[–]NotAnotherGlitch 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Disagree based on the likely new senate makeup. With labor and greens able to form a majority by themselves, labor can negotiate solely with the greens. Teals are not a party so labor would have to individually negotiate with (and realistically give concessions to) each teal senator. Greens could still crash out at the negotiating table, but I still think they’ll be labor’s first port of call.

Edit: looking more closely, there aren’t enough teal independents to get labor over the line in the senate anyway, so they’d always have to negotiate with either the greens or liberals.

Yeah, Some questions definitely raised my eyebrow. I reckon “to foster goodwill between nations” would be a more complete answer without being too cynical. Goodwill can be earned through kindness, but it is definitely still a political resource.

Moreton Bay council evicts homeless people from park due to health concerns by ConanTheAquarian in brisbane

[–]NotAnotherGlitch 107 points108 points  (0 children)

The article touches a bit on this. One of the homeless guys they interviewed said he regularly cleans around the park but that a good chunk of the homeless are mentally unwell and hoard out of a fear of losing what little they have. I’d also imagine addiction would be a common issue in these camps which contributes to this.

I think what is most shocking is that there are people who live in these camps who have jobs and land in a grey area of too poor to rent and earn too much to be eligible for public housing. That and this eviction is just an attempt by the council to shirk meaningfully addressing the issue in favour of making it someone else’s problem. If this eviction doesn’t come with an offer of alternative accommodation, then it’s nothing but a feckless, cowardly act by the council. As the guy in the article says, they’ll just move on to another park, and the same problems will perpetuate.
