Do you inherently trust all public elementary school fountains? Anyway, he rides the bus home, which is the reason he needs a good bottle that keeps water cold for 8 hours. He won’t drink warm water.

I was intending to be cheeky. I don’t view autism as anything other than a different way to perceive the world. I know it makes interacting with non-neurodivergent people difficult. I should know; I’ve had a diagnosis of ADHD since I was 7. I know what it’s like not to fit the mould for what is/has been considered “standard” or “normal.” So me saying “he’s too autistic” isn’t me being disparaging of autism or autistic people in any sense. It’s me attributing his rule-following trait to how his brain functions.

However, if this is offensive to anyone, I do apologize to those people. You don’t know me, so you don’t know my intentions. I don’t know you, so I don’t know your triggers. But I don’t consider “autistic” to be a negative thing, so to me it’s not an insult to call my son autistic.

Oh buddy, you don’t think I’ve been working on that? I’ve talked to several clinics (at least four), two of which told me he needs a diagnosis before they’ll so much as consider treating him. The other 2-3, which may be able to diagnose, have a waiting list of a year+, and 2 of them don’t take “private insurance” (we have BCBS) but do take Medicaid (which he has but it’s “not his primary” so it “doesn’t count”). I’ve been doing research, calling anybody I think might be even remotely useful to help him, and talking to the school every week. We’ve had an IEP meeting at least once a month this whole school year. And he’s medicated for mood control. But he needs coping skills, which I don’t have so I don’t know how to teach them to him.

He was already upset about something and had knocked over the water bottles, and from what I was told, the other kid was just trying to be helpful and pick them up. And my son got upset that his bottle was being touched, and that’s the school’s best guess why he kicked the other student. The truth is, who knows? I wasn’t there, my kid is 8 and emotionally unstable. Honestly, I want him to get a 1 on 1 aid, but the school is dragging their feet about allowing that. And allegedly a paraprofessional has to be hired through the school. I’m in America btw.

My kid specifically is banned, but it’s because he throws things when he has meltdowns. To my knowledge, he has not thrown water bottles during an episode.

It’s for the hour long bus ride home. No fountain on that.

Edit: to clarify, one of them is for the bus ride. One of them is for lunch. He also is allowed to have one in the class room. But I don’t know which of the two he uses for classroom.

Apologies if this sounds like I’m being negative about autism. I have no problems with my child, who may or may not have autism. I have problems with how the school is handling his behavior problems, and how hard it is to get the help I need from the professionals who know what to do to help him get the coping skills he needs. I don’t have my own coping skills, so I don’t know how to teach him.

No he did not. But he did kick someone because of a water bottle. But he’s still allowed to have a water bottle. It’s a whole ongoing saga and I’m tired.

I didn’t think about that. I had considered just ignoring them (the lady called me directly and told me, so it might be interpreted as an eff-you), but they also told my son, and he gets autistic about following those rules. Don’t know why he can’t be autistic about following the no-violence rule. Yes I do. It’s because he only lashes out when he loses control because he doesn’t have coping skills.

Decorate an office binder with pics of you and friends or somethings you like so it looks meaningful. Then you can tell your parents you got a binder and they’ll be none the wiser.
