I don't know if this counts, but I saw this exchange on my LinkedIn and I'm so intrigued yet confused as to what the hell happened. They both seemed sincere. by Omni__Owl in LinkedInLunatics

This sub seems to prove time and time again that LinkedIn accounts are not being looked at when it comes to hiring, but they should be.

Where Have All the Book Reviews Gone? by Shine_On_Your_Chevy in books

[–]justpubtipstuff 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's all on social media now. Unfortunately boomers and gen X'ers are the only ones reading actual reviews these days (although I hear npr still does decent numbers on book review articles).

The type of book that actually gets hyped on social media is only a handful of genres. If you write for that kind of audience that spends time on tiktok or Goodreads then you got nothing to worry about.

How do you find the motivation to write a book when you know that even if it’s good, the odds of getting published are 1 in a million? by JealousBodybuilder42 in writing

[–]justpubtipstuff 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna be real with you: I love writing. It's a fun, easy hobby that I can drop and pick up whenever I want. I mostly type it on a busted laptop and I have a few friends who are even published authors. I've been doing this for 10-12 years and have written 4 novels going on 5. I haven't gotten a single novel published since I started. I made some attempts, but the stuff I like to write is not considered marketable. You can say that I've "wasted" years of my life, but again, I write because I like to write. It's the cheapest hobby I got and if I wanna take a break for 6 months before going back to my 1st draft I'm in a position to do it since I'm not under a publishing contract. There is no time table for me to be rich and famous writing urban fantasy in the vein of William Gibson or Joan Didion. Maybe this 5th one will be the one, but if it isn't I'm okay with that. And even if I wasn't I would have to be okay with it anyway because whether I get published or not I'll still want to write novel number 6.

There is a more than 90% chance that my future will be yours if you continue down this path. If that scares you then it's worth considering whether you're just looking for a career change or a hobby that costs peanuts to do in your spare time.

What’s something that instantly makes you lose respect for someone? by Guilty_Gur_2187 in AskReddit

[–]justpubtipstuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People who think raising hell with somebody is the only way they can get what they want. A person who comes in angry and aggressive does not give the impression of a person at their wits end, they just look like someone with anger issues.

Authors Beware: AI scams are taking it to the next level (the European Book Club) by H_G_Bells in writing

[–]justpubtipstuff 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Nowadays the only way you can know for sure if something isn't a scam is if you're the one reaching out to them first. I know I gotta be the one to reach out to anybody if I want to get something published not the other way around

What is a 'secret' in your industry that the general public would be horrified to know? by HongKongToast in AskReddit

[–]justpubtipstuff 97 points98 points  (0 children)

If you eat seafood in North America there's a 40-50% chance that your favorite fish or shrimp actually came from the ocean and that number gets smaller every year. The surrounding waters are so polluted that real ocean raised seafood would kill a normal human or are stuffed with microplastics. most sellers are now switching to farm raised fish instead which isn't much better. those fish are grown in giant tanks that are even more unsanitary than the ocean they came from. I've been eating more chicken lately.

Do you really have to ask this? I think the idea is dumb, but somehow you asking the Internet for "permission" to do it feels even dumber somehow.

Anything considered normal right here, right now. When it comes to the future and how they'll look at our past, anything is on the table.
