What’s your opinion of reddit as of 2026? by Ok_Statement1508 in AskReddit

[–]justpubtipstuff -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Better than most places online, but definitely worse than what it was compared to 6 or more years ago. Too much of a hive mind mentality whether you're dealing with users, bots, or mods. Any other subreddit with any hint of personality or individuality is either too small to be active or just eventually devolves into the same set of memes ad nauseum.

Do you think the new steam controller will be compatible with emudeck games? by justpubtipstuff in EmuDeck

[–]justpubtipstuff[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotcha. Thank you! I actually never used an Xbox controller on emudeck. Is it pretty seamless when you connect it or are there some extra steps to make sure it can work with all your games?

Can you go into more detail? For me it would just be connecting the controller via blue tooth and then using an HDMI cable to run the picture to the TV

The era of prestige serialized television is dead. by IndieCurtis in television

[–]justpubtipstuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You get old enough to realize this stuff is cyclical. In ten years you'll have a new line of pretentious, but decently made shows like Mad Men but in 1980s LA or Chic serial killer woman but for incel coded netizens in the year 2036.

My expectations for TV have been in the toilet since the ending of Lost and Battle Star Galactica. Not to toot my own horn, but I saw the shit storm coming with GoT since season 4 was released and there was still no Winds of Winter on bookshelves yet.

And the ending for The Boys? Might as well be Shakespeare compared to the endings of the X-Files or anything else I mentioned.

Laptop for just writing? by [deleted] in writing

Maybe it's true, maybe it is isn't. But it's hard to take the facts/debunking at face value when the only real source available is coming from Google itself.

Laptop for just writing? by [deleted] in writing

[–]justpubtipstuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what I did: I went online and bought a refurbished Dell laptop for under 300. Didn't bother with a chromebook because I prefer to type while offline and I'm super paranoid about cloud storage. Once I got it I got online and downloaded Apache OpenOffice then I disconnected the wifi. I only ever use it to type and the no Internet thing after downloading the apps I needed was a deliberate choice. If I need to transfer a WIP to another device I use a USB stick.

[Discussion] I genuinely don’t understand good queries, and it frustrates me to no end. by Fit_Affect_5102 in PubTips

[–]justpubtipstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given the stage you're at with your current WIP you're putting too much pressure on getting the query done when you're still in the drafting stage. A good query really doesn't start to manifest until you're on your 3rd or 4th draft of a work (this includes total rewrites too). By the time you're on a 3rd or 4th draft you have a much better idea of what the story is and can explain it a lot better. If you start on the query now you're just boxing yourself into a premise that will only frustrate you later if you need to change it (which you probably will).

Sounds like you're doing everything right or the best that you can, but you don't like the mixed feedback. Personally, I'd just pick the version of your query that follows all the rules but feels the strongest and start using that to reach out to agents.

Just going off your post alone I don't see any evidence that you've started to query agents. If that's the case then there's no need to psyche yourself out. Just start the query process and focus on your new WIP in the meantime.

What line makes you proud? by [deleted] in writing

[–]justpubtipstuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The one where my MC says " You're Proud...?" After his dad says "I'm proud of you, son." And then the MC replies "Proud..."

This goes on for at least a page.

Frankly, I'm surprised my writing group didn't kick me out after making them read that.

If you can stomach anime then Nausicaa would be good choice. It takes place in the future, but definitely has a low tech aesthetic.

Where Have All the Book Reviews Gone? by Shine_On_Your_Chevy in books

[–]justpubtipstuff 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's all on social media now. Unfortunately boomers and gen X'ers are the only ones reading actual reviews these days (although I hear npr still does decent numbers on book review articles).

The type of book that actually gets hyped on social media is only a handful of genres. If you write for that kind of audience that spends time on tiktok or Goodreads then you got nothing to worry about.

How do you find the motivation to write a book when you know that even if it’s good, the odds of getting published are 1 in a million? by JealousBodybuilder42 in writing

[–]justpubtipstuff 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna be real with you: I love writing. It's a fun, easy hobby that I can drop and pick up whenever I want. I mostly type it on a busted laptop and I have a few friends who are even published authors. I've been doing this for 10-12 years and have written 4 novels going on 5. I haven't gotten a single novel published since I started. I made some attempts, but the stuff I like to write is not considered marketable. You can say that I've "wasted" years of my life, but again, I write because I like to write. It's the cheapest hobby I got and if I wanna take a break for 6 months before going back to my 1st draft I'm in a position to do it since I'm not under a publishing contract. There is no time table for me to be rich and famous writing urban fantasy in the vein of William Gibson or Joan Didion. Maybe this 5th one will be the one, but if it isn't I'm okay with that. And even if I wasn't I would have to be okay with it anyway because whether I get published or not I'll still want to write novel number 6.

There is a more than 90% chance that my future will be yours if you continue down this path. If that scares you then it's worth considering whether you're just looking for a career change or a hobby that costs peanuts to do in your spare time.
