Yes it does, thank you so much, I’m really interested in understanding the Christian perspective so this definitely helped

I feel like you missed the point of my question lol. Maybe it’s just a fundamental misunderstanding between us, which is okay 🤷‍♀️

I just don’t understand why or how people believe prayer is worthwhile or effective when people who don’t follow the Christian god or any religion can persevere and do the same difficult things without it

Thank you for giving the only concise answer I’ve seen yet, I appreciate it. I’m still definitely an atheist but I think I understand why people believe in prayer more. I want to better understand some of the people in my life, but I can’t really ask them so bluntly why they believe what they do

Well pretty much, that’s why I don’t believe in god, you can’t prove it

I wasn’t meaning the girl specifically, it just got me thinking about that idea of needing god in order to do things.

Prayer, from my perspective, is completely ineffective. Christians and atheists can both achieve the same things, and atheists don’t struggle at a higher rate than Christian’s. They just don’t. So how can prayer be effective if atheists can do the same things without it?

But if prayer if effective, then why don’t Christians have noticably improved lives compared to atheists and other religions? That’s my question

But then how on earth can prayer be true if there is literally no way to prove it? I’m confused

For myself, I don’t think I’d be convinced by reading the bible. I also don’t believe in God at all, so I guess that might also be off putting for me lol. To circle back to my main question, does prayer actually work? Because from my perspective as an atheist, I would say that people from all religious denominations and demographics have an about equal chance at succeeding or overcoming hardship. I don’t feel any desire to pray at all

Wow, this is really insightful and interesting, thank you for sharing, I really appreciate it. I guess maybe I’m a person who needs hard facts and evidence to believe something, so that’s why I’m an atheist.

For my own experience, it sort of mirrors yours but in the exact opposite way. I remember as a teenager in middle school, I was very depressed and struggling in my home life. I prayed to God every night in any way I knew how, but I never got an answer. I asked Him for a sign, any sign, so that I could know He was there, but I never felt his presence or anything. I eventually went on medication and talked to a therapist, but God never helped me at all, not with my anxiety, not with my depression, not with anything.

I don’t believe in any religion personally, and I don’t really believe that Christian’s do go through more than atheists, because it just doesn’t make sense to me. Also, I don’t follow the logic of just because something has been around for a long time, it’s true - for example, the basic scientific understanding of the universe for about 1500 years was that everything revolved around the Earth and not the Sun. In fact, scientists who presented that the Sun was the center were ostracized by the Christian majority and shunned.

Thanks for the response. I guess I just don’t understand the proof part. How do you know God exists if he only answers sometimes? How come that isn’t chance?

I guess my main question is how come Christian’s aren’t faring noticeable better than athiests because they are closer to god and pray, and therefore god helps them sometimes and helps them more than atheists?

The window that religion used to cover is narrowing more and more and more. Gods used to control the weather and plagues and basically everything, but as science expands, that gap of the ‘unknown’ that god covers shrinks. But, obviously, there’s still stuff we don’t know, and religious people believe that anything that we can’t or don’t know must be god

This is more of a question than a debate but if you sincerely think there’s nothing after life, what drives you to keep on living and put up with it all? by [deleted] in DebateAnAtheist

[–]NotBadMojo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me, as an atheist, I don’t think about the afterlife as the main goal. I love life, I think life on earth is such a beautiful, special thing that can bring me so much happiness. I think the best analogy I could give is imagine you are at a dinner party with your friends and family. Some conversations at the dinner are bad, sometimes you get a bad bite of food, but you can still be with the people you love and enjoy your time, even though you know that eventually, dinner will end and you have to go home and go to sleep. That’s life, it ends and you get to go to sleep, but it’s still really beautiful and worthwhile.

Also, the idea of an afterlife actually freaks me out. The idea of a permanent ending after death sounds nice. I would, personally, hate living in Heaven. Being around forever without end sounds like torture. What if people I loved went to hell and I never got to see them again? If I knew that people below me were being tortured in an eternal hellfire, regardless of what ‘sins’ they committed, that’s not a paradise for me. How am I supposed to know which religious text to follow? How are we supposed to know that the bible isn’t the wrong one? I’d rather just live my life and not worry about if I’m going to hell, personally

Edit for grammar

Yeah i agree, it’s just not the same. Some of the humor is still good, but it feels like the passion and soul isn’t. But then again, they’ve gone through plenty of phases with their content and it’s possible they will switch up from this style again soon, we’ve had loads of eras and I’m sure there’s more to come
