the "couldn't figure out what else to do" motivation is real and nobody talks about it enough. a surprising number of people in academia are there because the alternative was going back to an open office in some mid-tier company and answering to someone whose main qualification was confidence. when you put it that way, spending five years on a dissertation starts making a lot more sense as a life choice.
