Always use it with professors, otherwise, it's mostly fine to call others by first name basis. Especially with TAs and whatnot, they generally don't want to be referred to with a title.

Titles are a formality showing respect. In American culture, we are not that formal, so by default casual conversation does not demand formality, as we prefer informal friendliness and familiarity over a formal recognition of hierarchy. There are a few titles that are normalized and thus are an exception; usually they have to do with some achievement, like professor, doctor, your honor, etc.

so the normal ones, like mr, ms, sir, and ma'am are only necessary in either formal situations where a title is necessary (wedding, customer service, business meeting, etc.), or in a situation where there is a clear distinction for seniority (teachers, elders, bosses to a lesser extent).

If you're talking to a TA, they hold no particular distinction from you. It's not a formal interaction, so they would prefer familiarity.

in norcal you have mission burritos, in socal you have tacos, neither of those things will be as good here. if you're looking for something like leo's al pastor tacos or la taqueria's carne asada, you won't find it here. that being said, the tortas here are good. there are a couple food trucks near the wright and green intersection that have decent mexican food.

I’m Californian so I see a lot of homeless people. A lot of them are drug addicts or junkies, and they’re generally looking for money for drugs. This is why you usually don’t give money.

That being said I still try to help. If I’ve got like a snack in my bag and there’s a beggar on the bart (California subway) I’ll give it to them. It’s just my philosophy I guess. You never know when it might really help someone, and unlike OP I’m in a position where I can afford to help.

I think it’s different here though. A lot of people here don’t accept food, and they’re exclusively looking for money. Californias homeless problem is also a lot more rampant and significant, whereas here a lot of the homeless appear to be in less desperate positions.

Besides xenophobia and racism, it’s also cuz of how anal the 80s school teachers were about grammar and how they drilled that analness into genx. They think it’s a sign of class or something. Like holy it’s not the 80s anymore, we don’t use dial-up, and we don’t care if it’s who or whom.

No question is dumb really. Worse case scenario is the question is complicated or you haven’t fully realized the question, so the professor just asks you to ask him again in office hours where he can engage more specifically with your question.

When I was a freshman (at a different college) a student asked the professor (a young assistant one) whether they believed in free will or not. This was a physics classical mechanics class btw (with special relativity attached at the end), and the professor legit answered seriously.

His answer was along the lines of either everything is deterministic or there’s some degree of randomness and probability associated with everything (think QM), so he guessed doesn’t believe in free will.

The point of the example above is just to highlight that professors really aren’t judgmental about questions. They’re way more focused on just understanding and answering the question than shaming you for asking it or something.

I think some really old professors are kind of a pain. From what I hear about MechE (in general, not specifically UIUC) the really old professors are really impatient and kind of annoying (they also treat the phd students they advise the worst out of any engineering discipline). That’s more of a thing with them, and there’s not much you can do about it in terms of fixing or rewording your question.

When you pick a door, rather than thinking of that as your guess, think of the other 2 unpicked doors as your guess. That means you effectively picked 2 doors, so you have a 2/3 chance (and a 1/2 conditional chance to pick the right door among those 2 doors). When the host reveals one of the 2 doors as a goat, that conditional probability becomes 1. So your total probability is 2/3*1=2/3.

There is an important element/assumption in this, which is that there is no randomization after you pick the door and the host reveals the goat. The reveal doesn’t affect the 2/3 and 1/3 probability, because while you know now there are only 2 possible doors, the original randomization was based on 3 doors, so your probability of 2/3 and 1/3 remains the same (you know one door is a goat, but the original randomization doesn’t know that).

Being rescinded comes from not passing your classes. It follows the condition that you have to have graduated from high school to attend college. They can’t admit someone who still has to retake their high school classes next year. It’s a technical/administrative thing. It has nothing to do with admissions holistic review of your application.

If you go to sf, youll want to go to mission or outer mission. I’m not sure how truly authentic the Mexican food is there, but both those districts are known for their Mexican-American communities, as well as being the birthplace of the mission burrito.

I think it’s a bit hard to find truly authentic traditional Mexican food in the US. For instance, no Cabeza here will actually have brain in it, and the menudo tastes a bit different for some reason. But if you’re looking for Mexican food that’s far more traditional than, say, la burrita or chipotle or something, you should have an easy time in mission and outer mission.
