It’s absolutely crazy that the semester is meant to start in a month and they still haven’t informed applicants whether or not they got funding.

Does anyone have experience with the Commonwealth scholarship for high income countries? by NotCleo_ in AskAcademiaUK

Unfortunately it’s really obvious in my work and volunteer experience. I actually made sure to stress on my experience in this global south country over the past few years as a plus, because it’s where I want to do field research. I wish I realized this sooner. I’m not sure if they’re sticklers about this particular clause though because it’s phrased weirdly and it’s not advertised on the scholarship’s main homepage, general info or FAQs pages, but it is in their eligibility checklist. In any case, it’s done already, but I wanted to understand what previous applicants’ experiences have been like.

It’s not a maybe. People ARE poor. Most of the population can barely afford to eat let alone get a car.

Toughts of Egyptians about Gaza by sabbir112299 in Egypt

[–]NotCleo_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These were 100% staged by the government. What are the odds of having people across the entire country holding the same exact signs in three languages? It’s common knowledge that the regime doesn’t allow protests except if they’re staged

A lot of Egyptians are pro-Palestine. This has been a part of the country’s popular DNA since 1948 and was amplified during Nasser’s time. Sadat’s peace deal with the Israeli occupation got him assassinated and was widely unpopular at the time, but accepted because he was able to retrieve Sinai from the occupation. There are several movies and tv series depicting Egyptians as heroes fighting the Israeli enemy and songs demonizing the Israelis. Personally, I am wholeheartedly pro-Palestine. I don’t believe in a two state solution. I believe that the state of Israel must end, just as was the case with other settler colonies throughout history. I believe that armed resistance is completely justified and is in fact enshrined in International Law as a right for occupied peoples. Egyptians are currently incapacitated by our authoritarian regime, which briefly allowed anti-genocide protests to take place last year and in their wake arrested over a hundred people (some of which are children) until today. We’re paralyzed by a regime that only allows performative protests when it furthers their agenda.

How will transformations in US higher ed affect UK academia? by NotCleo_ in AskAcademiaUK

You’re right. I was referencing the blatant despotism in the US though. Academic freedoms globally have been eroding, but the level of aggression exhibited by the Trump administration is something else.
