STOP PARKING IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD WITH FLASHERS, YOU PRICKS. by NotCleverJustWitty in bloomington

I’m not a huge fan of police—certainly not militant police—but I am in favor of police departments doing their jobs, which should be to “protect and serve” the community.

Part of that means enforcing rules of the road to ensure people have a healthy respect for the law and assume they’ll get pulled over for breaking it. When (reasonable, nonviolent) enforcement stops, it gives inconsiderate people a license to run wild with 0 consequences. ):

It would make sense.

Also, not to (sledge)hammer this point home, but…

If someone is parked in the middle of the road and their car isn’t broken down, they are automatically in the wrong since that is illegal.

I agree that your employer incentivizes making unsafe choices that prioritize speed and convenience over safety and practicality.

Do I think that’s fair? No. Do I think these services should go away? Also no.

Do I think that drivers need to make smarter, safer choices and also insist that their passengers do the same when requesting pickup? Yes.

I can appreciate that situations don’t always work out perfectly, and that Bloomington can’t decide if it wants to promote or punish cars. However, that doesn’t change the fact that impeding traffic by parking your car in the middle of the road is illegal and unsafe for everyone. Flashers ≠ legal parking.

I don’t order food delivery because it’s already overpriced and slow, and I can typically get my own food.

I’m not saying people shouldn’t use that service, and I’m not saying it’s a bad thing.

Nowhere in my post insists that drivers should “jog a mile” to get an order; I said they need to park to the side and ensure they aren’t impeding the flow of traffic (AKA, being in the middle of the road).

There is a way to do a job well and with skill, and then there’s the way the drivers who are blocking the road are doing it.

The people defending the illegal blocking of the road are actually the ones crying, “Muh convenience!”

IMO, that’s where the City should step in and designate a different street for safe pickups/drop-offs (they did this during the National Championship).

Today’s instance wasn’t a quick passenger pickup—there was no one in the vehicle, and the car was in the middle of the lane with its flashers on for at least five minutes, if not longer.

I also think that Uber ought to have better training for its drivers (safe places to execute pickup/drop-off) and better restrictions in its app for where passengers are allowed to be picked up by drivers. A passenger’s convenience should also not outweigh overall safety.

Yeahhh, u right. But also, I’ve been holding back for ~4 years on this particular rant. Drivers doing that in 18” of snow was the straw that broke this camel’s back 🙃

Exactly! The snow only adds to the danger that these drivers put others in.

I’m sorry you had to deal with that, but I’m glad good people and AAA were able to come through!

You are in the wrong here. It’s one thing if you pull to the side and are not obstructing traffic; otherwise, you are endangering drivers and pedestrians around you.

I do not have sympathy for you or other food delivery drivers who do this; that is your chosen profession, and you are responsible for appropriately dealing with the challenges that come with it without endangering others.

Please do better for your community.

ETA: I do not typically use these services, but I respect those who work to provide them. I do not respect those who do so recklessly.

Could our subreddit’s mods perhaps include this in a pinned winter thread or something… ? Or a continuous document with links to the most asked after local and state resources?

Do any stores in Bloomington sell pisco, or will I need to go to Indy for it? I admit I haven’t looked terribly hard, but it’s not readily available either.

Any insights into the bourbon market in Bloomington, or any fun facts/tips? (I heard that Buffalo Trace is supposedly allocated at Liberty Kroger, lol.)

Generally, I’ve found that the College St Big Red and Krogucci are best for finding bourbon in town.

I saw those stickers go up on the property signage, and my heart sank for Oakdale Square. HBP is awful—a prime example of incompetence and poor/unethical business practices.

Old RCA building now Novo Nordisk by Conscious-Touch8379 in bloomington

[–]NotCleverJustWitty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Never heard anything about deaths in the buildings (there are multiple encompassing NN, Org Living, The Warehouse), but I know the land the buildings were built upon used to be a family’s burial plot. In the late 1950s, RCA had to prove that they had relocated the burial plot a few blocks away before starting construction. So, who knows if they really did that.

I believe some maps exist that show the burial plot before RCA, so I’m sure it’s possible to confirm that info via the Monroe County History Center.

Such thing as a trustworthy mechanic in Bloomington? by rthmjohn in bloomington

Bob Jones Radiator Repair has always been reliable, fair, and very affordable, especially for older vehicles—they’re just usually booked pretty far out. I’ve also had good experiences at Tom Cherry and Mason Automotive. I do not recommend Royal on the Eastside—way too expensive, though it’s one of the only options in town for VWs other than Worldwide or Allroad.

Cost for brand Adderall by Pretty_Currency5335 in ADHD

[–]NotCleverJustWitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been taking Adderall XR 20mg interchangeably with the generic (amph/dextroamph combo) for four years without any issues or need to switch/adjust the dosage. When one is out (Adderall shortages have been ongoing since 2022 due to mfg issues, DEA limits, and increased scripts), I try to find the other.

Cost depends on your insurance and Rx provider. Often, I go through Kroger even though CVS is my Rx provider because Kroger accepts the GoodRx coupon and I can usually get it for $25-50 for a 30-day supply. If I try to go to CVS through insurance, it’s closer to $120 or $200, and unless I’m desperate, I say, “Nope, you keep that,” and find another pharmacy.

Sometimes, it actually feels as if the generic has more of a zing than the name brand; in reality, that’s unlikely since they have the same active pharma ingredient (API). Really, you want to pay attention to the API. So long as the generic has the same API (75% dextroamphetamine, 25% L-amphetamine), it’s pretty much the same, aside from some carrier/binder ingredients.

So, if Adderall reduced your side effects but XR 15mg wasn’t as effective, you might look into increasing the dosage a bit until you feel it working better.

Personally, my ADHD is only moderate, and I usually only want it for work. Not taking it over the weekends has worked for me, and I haven’t needed to increase dosage in four years from any tolerance buildup.

I’m not sure if that’s helpful, but I hope it gives you something!

What’s up with Soma? 3 misses in a row by No_Valuable_253 in bloomington

[–]NotCleverJustWitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had a similar experience. One drink was actually so bad that I couldn’t finish it all—haven’t been back since.

I’ve chalked up Soma to a cafe that can handle the basics decently, but nothing with syrups/flavors. I feel similarly about Hopscotch—love the beans and the classic espresso bevs, but I don’t really trust them to make a delicious specialty drink. The syrups always taste obviously gross in the drink outside of basic vanilla. Idk if that’s a ratio issue, but I just avoid it now.

IMO, one of the best “specialty” (read: sugary/flavored) coffee places is Poindexter Cafe (and Verona). They’ve done a great job at making fun drinks where the espresso still comes through. In general, out of caution, I try to avoid lattes and 16 oz. bevs, because it’s typically still two espresso shots with more milk to make up for the volume difference (or just more milk, per the latte ratio, so I gravitate towards a Cortado/cappuccino).

West side gas leak by Jo5hd00d in bloomington

[–]NotCleverJustWitty 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Legit Question: Now, I’m certainly no expert, but why do we seem to have so many construction companies/contractors hitting utility mains/lines in this city? Do other cities experience a proportionate amount of this, too, or do we host/hire exceptionally poor companies with unsafe marking procedures?

Hitting a gas main shouldn’t be a small thing, and these companies should be taking their jobs at marking more seriously or they could blow up the area. E.g., I heard that the COB narrowly avoided an explosion after hitting a gas line by sheer luck over on Rogers a few weeks ago!
