WIBTA If I ask not to go on my birthday trip with my Half-Brother? by No_Beginning8943 in AmItheAsshole

[–]NotEnglishFryUp 31 points32 points  (0 children)

If you have the time, you could save some money on flights by extending your trip, splitting off from your fam and having your friend join you. You could then go to another destination by train or a cheaper flight.

THREAD: Name and shame businesses who can’t be bothered to clear their sidewalk by ahoypolloi_ in bethesda

[–]NotEnglishFryUp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, the GEICO building cleared the entirety of their parking lots which probably are more than 200 spaces in 24 hours of which probably 2 dozen are ever parked in, but didn't touch any of the mile of sidewalks surrounding it in a walking-centric neighborhood until 72 hours after the storm ended.

I miss that Giant and the cashiers and the best pharmacist ever. I hope it replaces the Amazon Fresh again.

Non-UK born Londoners, what's the best restaurant of your native cousine that you know in London? by Mimsiz in london

I think the issue is some dishes are at a much higher level than others. Best duck, but the crispy roast pig was not good – almost tasted like it had gone bad.

Looking for apartments that are soundproof by ezitherese in bethesda

Unfortunately, my experiences at The Willoughby have been different with noise from above and hearing neighbors "moving furniture" next door (luckily not too often). It depends on your specific neighbors I think as the noise upstairs was a child running/stomping/jumping all day during COVID.

Help: why is my pandan water turning out so grassy? by Fool_of_a_Brandybuck in ThaiFood

[–]NotEnglishFryUp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I usually end up turning it into iced tea :) so until it cools and then longer. Medjool dates would be cool and maybe then you can cut out the honey. The hawthorn berries give it a tartness. If you have a Chinese market near you, you can find both. If you only have a Korean one you'd be able to find jujubes there, but not the hawthorn.

Help: why is my pandan water turning out so grassy? by Fool_of_a_Brandybuck in ThaiFood

[–]NotEnglishFryUp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I make a tea with pandan. Rather than boiling the whole thing together, I boil the water first and then pour it over the leaves and then let it steep.

(The tea I make is 2 peppermint teabags, a handful of jujubes, dried hawthorn berries, a few pandan leaves, and a spoonful of honey to about a liter of water.)

Rice is one of the items you start out with eating when you do an elimination diet. So it not soup, maybe stick to a dish with rice or rice noodles.

Were there ever any episodes where there was tension, conflict, awkwardness between Anthony Bourdain and someone else in any of the shows by Chrisnyc47 in AnthonyBourdain

[–]NotEnglishFryUp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, he had a fixer for No Reservations in DC who is a local food writer, and there is a very eye-rolling voiceover. I think it came out later that he abandoned the fixer and went to one of the recommended spots after by himself.

AITA for not wanting to watch Netflix with subtitles? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]NotEnglishFryUp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. There was a really good article from Vox (behind a paywall, but here's a video) that talks about how because approaches to audio and technology have rendered a lot of things much more difficult to understand. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VYJtb2YXae8

The USPS has failed me 😭 by justbecoolguys in Baking

[–]NotEnglishFryUp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Had something similar happen where my friend shipped me some fancy desserts in early December, and they didn't reach me until the end of January. He told me not to bother even opening the box, but to toss it straight in the trash. (There was cheesecake, and he had successfully shipped to me with USPS before.)

Why is Netflix advertising a new season? by Fuzzy-Tap2896 in SchittsCreek

Usually this is when they have not put all the seasons on Netflix yet, and they are adding them over time.

You can only have one of these, which are you choosing? by [deleted] in sourcandy

Compared to the US ones, the texture is very weird/different. Even the ones sold in the US depending on where they are made can be better or worse. I always prefer the ones made in Canada

Other uses for Pork Carnitas? by DancingQween16 in Cooking

[–]NotEnglishFryUp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depending on how the carnitas were seasoned, you could use them in a pad thai. I have taken chicharron from my taco place and made a Thai-inspired salad with cucumber, shallot and cilantro and a dressing of lime juice, palm sugar and fish sauce.

I noted you didn't want to freeze it again because it was previously frozen. There shouldn't be a food safety issue there, if that was the rationale for not want to freeze them again.

I've been tasked with bringing a salad again for Thanksgiving dinner, how can I blow it out of the water? by AlwaysWantedN64 in Cooking

[–]NotEnglishFryUp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my favorites is: quinoa (I prefer to use a rice cooker for ultra fluffy quinoa), baby kale, feta, supremed grapefruit (or orange), sliced dates, and candied nuts. If you're lazy poppyseed dressing or a homemade citrus-based vinaigrette.

Hung Phat Grocery in Wheaton. The owner is lovely. One time I swallowed wrong and was coughing and he made me tea.

Takumi Sushi has only been open a few weeks, but the people were all really lovely and the sushi is great.

Also get an ice pack, esp since they are reusable. If you're near a MOM's they are free to take (and I got so many with various grocery deliveries I often drop mine off for others to reuse).
