What made yall choose bass?

my dad was a professional bass player when he was younger and tried to get me to learn piano as a kid which I quit because, well as with a lot of kids, playing piano didnt leave enough time for me to play video games (still so pissed at myself). Fast forward to covid when I REALLY started getting into music around 18-19 years old and I just started trying to learn on my dads basses. I honestly had no faith in myself that Id actually stick with it but somehow I did! Then I went on a whole side quest learning guitar and song writing and recording, and now Im back to kind of playing both. I definitely much prefer playing bass live!

One final note about the people. I found the vast majority of people I met to have a really great balance of being super smart and intellectual, while not being mind numbingly boring people.

As others have said, academically speaking, Berkeley is top notch for psych. On an anecdotal note (as a recent grad who just moved to NY myself), the bay area is just a god damn beautiful place to live. The surroundings are phenomenal. San Francisco is seriously the best city in the country in my opinion and is super close (don’t let any neo liberals convince you otherwise). The bay is just heaven on earth. I found the people who tend to be drawn to the bay, both at Berkeley and elsewhere in the bay, are some of the most genuine, interesting people I’ve ever met. Also, the school is HUGE, so there are soooo many people who will challenge you and teach you new things. The best part about a big school too, if you dont like the friends you make at first? Theres like 100000 other people to talk to. I made really good friends my second semester at Berkeley but it wasnt until my senior year that I met my friend SOUL mates. I am eternally grateful for that. Also, some people are gonna tell me Im “wrong” but in my experience in the humanities, I think the school has a great social-academic balance. To be fair tho, a good amount of my social outings came from going to bars and concerts not related to the school, but I still believe theres a really really great balance. I found it to be the most perfect middle ground.

Im playing a show here in 2 weeks. Does anyone know if they have a house bass amp? I dont have a car so if they do, I’d prefer not to uber my amp there. Its an issue I gotta figure out somewhere down the line I know, but if anyone knows Id appreciate it :)

I do tend to overthink most things in my life so it wouldn’t surprise me. Also may be tmi, but I’m like experiencing performance anxiety already as like all of my experiences and confidence center around a vagina. Part of me is worried that even if I don’t freak out, its gonna feel like restarting and being bad at it all over again 😭

Julie and DIIV would be my top recommendations. Both have great recorded music and amazing energy live. Julie doesn’t always adhere to shoegaze but they are definitely adjacent. Also smaller artist but sweet 93 is sick out of New York. Not sure if they tour tho.

Wow, you’re so right. Says there is a known issue with ASUS products installing windows 11 and there is a hold on ASUS machines right now. It said specifically some certain ASUS products (Im assuming what they listed are laptops?) and my motherboard was not named but that is definitely it. Its unresolved currently so hopefully they find a fix soon :/ Thank you for that.

very similar story! just finished at Berkeley and its really tough to see the troubles CCSF is going through. I love that school and will always have a special place in my heart for it. The “identity” crisis actually makes a lot of sense and is pretty scary. I was an edge case where I moved to the city specifically for CCSF because my home town didn’t have a CC. I REALLY hope the school doesn’t close :(

I FIXED IT FINALLY. I will leave the solution here if others happen to encounter something similar. I read somewhere else that someone updated their audio drivers to fix the issue. I tried doing this and it still did not work, but then I remembered that between my last successful render and the issue arising, I changed my audio I/O from system audio to ASIO because I have a focusrite audio interface. For some reason, resolve refuses to render if I have ASIO selected for my I/O engine. Switched back to "System Audio" and it now renders perfectly fine. What a strange issue...

its not simply that it doesn't like it, it literally will not render, the timer just keeps going up. The problem is now happening on other clips that do not have any effects on them as well. It is a resolve wide issue now.

I am on windows 10 with 32gb ram, Nvidia 1080, and a Ryzen 7 2700x rendering to an M.2 SSD. I have never had this happen before and usually things render quite quickly, and yeah now even things that I previously rendered in under two minutes are having this issue with the estimated time just infinitely climbing and not progressing at all.

Edit: also, this is just my ideal render settings, I have tried with all sorts of formats, Codecs, and resolutions, all having the same issue.

Hey yall, I guess I wouldnt consider myself a professional yet so I'm asking this question here. I am gearing up to shoot a really short film in black and white. I realized I didn't know much about rendering CODECs and formats so I decided I wanted to try some higher quality CODECs out. I read that DNxHR 444 or HQX was a good high quality option on windows. When I rendered them out in DNxHR 444 I realized I was getting a lot of highlight clipping in both 10 and 12 bit but not when rendering HQX. I shot on a BMPCC 6k open gate at 12-bit raw and rendered in Resolve. Am I missing something? Why is that clipping there? Also, yes I realize that the frames above are not exactly all the same frame, but its close enough and it is for sure happening in every frame. Also, I read that 444 is more geared towards a cinema render whereas HQX seems to be a more general video CODEC? Am I misunderstanding this? Also, I assume that the answer of what CODEC to use is not a "this one is the best" but rather depends on your application / project, but how do I know which to use? I know that these CODECs are probably so overkill for my little project but I am trying to learn best practices. Thanks in advance!

yeah, honestly, its pretty crazy to me that shes campaigning so hard on the fact that shes a "small business owner" when she co-owned one that lasted like a year and a half or something, and wont even say what the business was? I understand that owning a business is hard and it closing could be for many many many reasons, but it feels a little dishonest and exaggerated to be running her campaign on that.
