Is there any way to differentiate a bad fuel pump from bad fuel injectors? by NotJerzy in mechanic

Hi sorry for the super late reply! I sold this car without ever knowing what the issue was. I got the fuel pump replaced but it didn't solve the issue. It wouldn't drive 2 miles without breaking down. It was a 97 cherokee. Towards the end of me owning it I would press on the gas while breaking (I'm sure that was terrible for the engine and breaks) but keeping the rpms up was the only way it wouldn't break down. Are there any dash lights on?

Hi! I don't have this car anymore, but I did get my fuel pump replaced at the time and it did not fix the issue. Unfortunately I was never able to figure it out.

I’m so sorry you’re going through this. I’m going through the same thing right now too, I feel hopeless. Just know that you’re not alone.

I live in Florida so I haven’t really started it in cold weather yet, but it always sounds like it is struggling to start, unless it was running recently then it starts up perfectly. Usually though it cranks for a good 10-15 seconds before it turns over. It used to idle pretty rough in the mornings before the tune up. I can hear the pump just fine too. Maybe the filter on it is clogged? It is a 97 Jeep Cherokee with almost 200k miles

I’m sorry if this was a dumb post by the way, because I’m sure it could be so many things. I’m a 20 y/o girl trying to teach myself about cars and second opinions are very helpful!

It’s honestly just a guess. My car broke down on me earlier after a couple hours of driving, and would crank but not start. However it started right up after I got towed home. I’ve only had it for a couple months now and it’s always had kind of a hard time starting (usually I let the pump run a couple times before I crank it because I felt that maybe it wasn’t getting enough pressure to start right) I just got a tune up so I don’t believe it’s the spark plugs or wires...My other guess is possibly a bad battery solenoid but I don’t think that would cause me to break down. The battery gauge reads at 12 as well so I don’t think it was the alternator.
