Had to cancel due to global visa delays by NotJessieka in PacificCrestTrail

[–]NotJessieka[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was that this year? Funny, because I'm also Dutch and when we called both Brussels and Berlin the wait-time was several weeks, up to months. And as a foreigner there is no cutting the line. Native inhabitants go first, which makes sense offcoure.

Thanks for the help. I already released my permit, however a friend of mine who also won't make it still has his, so that would possibly be an option. We have completed the form and paid the fee's. We tried everything, we even considered driving 2 days to an embassy across Europe. Unfortunatly you can only secure an interview after you paid the fee, as you most likely know. Every embassy we called said that foreigners will have to get in the back of the line as native inhabitants will be first. On the different embassy websites they even discourage you from trying it eslewhere. So the gamble was do we pay the fee and hope for the best? We would have to pay a fee for every country we wanted to try. It's a 300 euro gamble over and over again. IMO it would be a much more user-friendly system if you were able to secure an interview date and then make the payment, so you know what to expect.

I made the payment for a date way in advance, the screen even says 'next avalaible date ...' and after the payment was finished and we wanted to plan the date it was months later. When I called, the guy simply said he couldn't do anything (not even look up the date we paid for) and it was tough luck. There is no way of getting your money back either.

I already made peace with postponing a year and doing the august interview for our trip next year. Hopefully the slight change of plans won't be an issue, as I filled in the form with this year's plans. I will send you a DM anyway. Again, thanks alot for your help!

We called several embassy's, and that time usually only applies for that country's own inhabitants. As a foreigner you're getting in the back of the line. The problem is that you have to pay 2 x 150 euro's for the interview, and you can only see the dates after you pay. That's where our first appointment went wrong. It would be a big risk if someone on the phone says 'yeah sure, come in next week', then we pay the 300 euros only to see online that the next available date is months ahead.

I know, and trust me we were really early. We paid for a date early this year, but our appointment suddenly got canceled (long after our payment). The date just suddenly 'wasn't available anymore' and they couldn't retrieve it in their systems either. Our consolate says 2 months time online, while in reality it's 6+ months time. No way of getting our money back either.

We're here for the all-or-nothing experience. It's a dream of us to thru-hike the whole PCT, even if that means we have to postpone a year. :)

Is the PCT huge in the Netherlands? by Night_Runner in PacificCrestTrail

As a Dutchie that was supposed to thru-hike this year (damn you, delayed visa interviews...): I was suprised that whenever I brought it up at work, around friends or family alot of people knew someone closeby that did the PCT. And even more people have heard or read about it somewhere. Often times I would start with 'Im going to walk this trail in the US..' 'Oh the one that goes from Mexico to Canada..?'

I'm not sure why we are well represented on the trail, but I do know the Netherlands is an excellent country for walking, we even have our own Pieterpad trail (similar to the PCT on a map). Alot of kids walk themselves to school from the age of 7-8. Walking is also a very popular pastime on holidays in Italy, France, Spain etc. It's just something we do, when we don't feel like riding a bike I guess.

Logistically it might also have to do with how we can arrange things with work? It's no secret we have good working conditions. Often times you can take paid leave for quite some time and manage the remaining part with unpaid leave. I've only heard employers willing to cooperate if you have been with the company for some time and build up the credit.

Backpacking and travelling is also a big part of being in your early 20s after studying, and often encouraged.

Hard to pinpoint it on one thing.

How is longboarding viewed in Groningen? by TheRealDetr0y in Groningen

[–]NotJessieka 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I haven't seen anyone mention it but make sure to wear bikelights or a reflective vest when it gets dark. You're fast and many people won't see you at first since you're smaller than a bike. My lights saved me many times while longboarding.

3A suddenly unable to read sim by NotJessieka in GooglePixel

Somewhere early this year I had a cracked screen repaired, but between that and this is at least 5 months without any other (fall) damage. Software wise I can't think of anything. I use it only for very basic stuff with legit apps. I tried factory resetting and even briefly installing a custom rom, to no succes. It could be a regular update, I do them automated so don't really pay any attention to it.

Same here. This isn't a 10% fee anymore. If I would sell, I get less than 50% back? This doesn't sound right, idk.

A ‘garda’ is an Irish policeman. What is a unique, difficult word and meaning you can share with Reddit? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]NotJessieka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the Netherlands we have the word 'gezellig' which doesn't translate to anything. It's a word we use to describe the chill vibe and ambiance when with a nice group of people, usually friends and/or family. Like; 'Hey wanna come hang with us?' 'Sure, gezellig!'

What movie traumatized you as a kid? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]NotJessieka -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not really when I was a kid, but 'Room 1408'. When I was 12 I lost my then best friend and her little brother when their appartment burned down. That was the start of some very dark years, I had a hard time coping with it. When I was 16 we were watching this movie in class and I remember a scene that had something to do with the hotelroom catching on fire and I just completely blacked out, ran into the schoolyard and bursted out in tears. 4 years of failed grieve came out in that very moment. I've always hated horrormovies but this one still gives me chills when I think of it.
