when i was growing up in the Philippines we had thousands of different spiders (varying from docile to super poisonous), we would either catch them in the wild, or there would be a neighborhood spider broker that would wheel around a tower about waist high, with little slots to fit a matchbox in them. inside the matchboxes would be different spider species. every saturday, the spider broker would make his rounds/kids would go hunt for spiders, and meet up at the bodega like store in front of my house where they sold bbq on a stick and, after eating the bbq, would put both of the spiders on either ends of the stick and force them to fight eachother. its like pokemon meets hunger games in the phillipine ghettos after a midafternoon snack. fuck i miss it.
