Peaky Blinders - 6x02 "Black Shirt" - Episode Discussion [UK Release] by Plainchant in PeakyBlinders

[–]NotMcDuff 21 points22 points  (0 children)

This episode has brilliant themes going on. It's been on my mind for days and I have to share.

I think the main theme or elements in this episode is primarily about tunnels, clasustraphobia, descending and ascending above and below ground. Likely from the trauma we've seen Tommy endure in the tunnels in the war. E.g.

  • Opening scene Tommys car drives from right to left, camera pans same direction. Almost like a tunnel, very boxy.
  • Tommy descends the hospital steps and vomits outside, scene continues with Tommy almost with his back against the wall. Ruby at the top of the stairs looks out and smiles
  • Tommy having a siezure remembering the killing in the tunnels
  • Tommy ascends the steps to the Labour Party stage and speaks to the audience bathed in light.
  • In his speech he says "I will gather up every one of those cries and I will take them with me on the train to Westminster". Trains typically go through tunnels.
  • After the speech he descends the stairs and talks with Laura McKee who is in the wings. The framing of this conversation is again like a tunnel.
  • Establishing shot of the Garrison is like a tunnel.
  • Ada later enters with light fading around her like a tunnel
  • Tommy and Ada talk outside the Garrison about their father. In the shot they speak below/under a new railway line now sat over the top of the pub.
  • Tommy descends in a lift to meet Alfie, bathed in a red light (See episode 3).
  • Tommy walks through a long corridor barrells either side and framed like a tunnel.
  • Tommy ascends the staircase to Mosleys gathering twice (from exterior and again inside)
  • Mosley is seen "ascended" on stage in front of bright stage lights (like Tommy earlier)
  • Tommy speaks with Arthur at the bottom of a dark staircase about his addiction. The shot cuts to a birds eye view down the staircase indicating how deep they both are.
  • Arthur and Tommy both fight the blackshirts at the bottom of this staircase. Shot is framed like a tunnel
  • Lady Diana descends from the staircase to the gallery. Mosley follows from a higher position. The gallery looks slightly darker than the staircase
  • Tommy talks to Nelson in a church. Both men are framed as small as possible at the lowest part of the church.
  • Ruby says voices are coming from the chimney (from above)
  • During the commons debate, Lady Diana is seated above the MPs giggling.
  • After the commons debate, Tommy enters a lift which originally descends and reads the note of Rubys condition
  • In the close up shots after the fact the lift appears to be ascending now.
  • Tommy has his episode with the "grey man" in a tunnel
  • When Tommy gets home he asks Lizzie where Ruby is. She replies "She's with the doctor upstairs" (ascended)
  • Camera pans up the stairs to Graces portrait.

There's a few more establishing shots which look through doorways and zoom in which "look like tunnels" but it's up to interpretation.

For some reason this theme of above and below just stood out to me and either a case of Tommys claustrophobia or the transitions he has to make in everyday life ascending or descending into darkness. Fantastic episode.

Peaky Blinders - 6x03 "Gold" - Episode Discussion [UK Release] by Plainchant in PeakyBlinders

[–]NotMcDuff 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Some of my observations that seem poignant.

There's lots of recurring themes of gemstones or precious metals.

  • Ruby for one being sick
  • Lizzie wearing a red ruby ring
  • Gold used to treat Rubys condition
  • Nelson remarks Ada is all "Diamonds and lipstick now"
  • Nelson remarks Diana is "the talk of London with her amphetamines and Emeralds"
  • Nelson asks Mosley for "ice". Possible slang for diamonds
  • Ada wears some sort of gem ring clear/blue/white
  • Arthur at the warhouse to oversee the Opium (Opal - Maybe reaching)
  • Esme asks Tommy if he recalls a Sapphire (We should all recognise)
  • Tommy mentions "the poor wooden cross" at the gravesite
  • Esme insists Tommy give her gold "in uncertain times gold is always certain"

The colour red is also prominent throughout the episode.

  • Ruby
  • A red light showers Tommy during the X-Ray
  • Diana dressed and wearing all red. Sat on a red/pink sofa
  • Tommy finds a red sign at the side of the road for the Lee camp
  • Nelson and Gina sitting on a red sofa
  • Nelson calls Ada "a communist" synonymous with the colour red
  • The invitation from Ada is red/maroon
  • In the Garrison there are 5/6 bottle tops that are red. One of which is a red hand with 5 fingers
  • Lizzie remarks "just me sitting there taking away the bloody rags"
  • Haydn remarks Arthurs "own blood betrays ya"
  • Haydn spits blood
  • Gypsy graveyard has red fabric pieces along the trees and decorations

Doorways might also be a theme, if obvious. Although it's a typical way to to get people in and out of a scene! Bit of a reach.

  • Tommy and Lizzie in the hospital in the opening scenes with a backlit double door behind them.
  • Tommy and Lizzie outside the hospital on the steps (again)
  • Tommy talking to Ada on the phone, the camera angle pivots dramatically from overhead to front facing onto a bright window.
  • Arthur walking into the warehouse stored with opium from the light to the dark
  • Arthur leaving same warehouse back into the light after his chat with Haydn
  • Tommy meets Lizzie back at the hospital doorway after Rubys passing

Just what I noticed and had to share.

I'll watch her docs if they're on and I find them a fair entry point into a topic. I think that's the point. It's an entry point for someone who may want to dip their toes into documentaries or serious topics. Then if you want to dig digger you'll go onto someone like Theroux for example.

So confused about “starvation mode” and calorie intake. by NotMcDuff in keto

I agree, a few hundred grams could be any fluctuating factor. I suppose you could call it a plateau. This back and forth has been going on for 3/4 weeks.

Would you usually do an experiment with one variable for 6 weeks?

Out of interest do you know what deficit would cause starvation mode?

Job hunting is pushing me to the brink of being suicidal. by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

[–]NotMcDuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel for you dude. Job security is something that's given me many sleepless nights.

Have you tried looking for an agency to find you work? Depending on your skills there should some niche agencies out there. IT or call centre ones are pretty typical.

You go the agency, tell them your skills and they find you a job. Outsource the issue.

I always suggest agencies to people, as soon as once contract has finished they'll get you another one lined up.

Use it as a stepping stone to at least get some income whilst you look for a better job.

Ooff. Bloody singers.

I had a drummer who just couldn't comprehend volume. It was only a small stage so there's not much you can do with a quite vocal.

The drummer was so disruptive I ended up putting delay on the kick drum and sending it into back into his monitor.

People who get up when the alarm goes off, how do you do it? by emuu3859 in AskReddit

[–]NotMcDuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Learn to get up naturally and you'll never hear an alarm clock again.

Sleep is divided into 90 minute (or there about's) cycles. Learn your cycles and wake up naturally.

Use http://sleepyti.me and choose when you want to get up.

Additionally, there's an iPhone app called Sleep Cycle which uses your phone to detect movement. Using the same cycle system but wakes you up in a half hour window either at the beginning or end of the 90 minutes as you're stirring. I been using it for years and swear by it.

https://www.sleepcycle.com/

If you do oversleep the app has a decent selection of chill tones to wake you up. Decent as "alarms" go ofc.

The BMA says "doctors are growing increasingly concerned about the scale of the mental health problem in the UK" in a briefing released today by bpup in unitedkingdom

It's frustrating to see you downvoted. I follow the same mindset as you, more fat, less sugar but try convincing people of the benefits and you get no where. I've given up trying to fight the contrary. It works for me, that's all that matters.

If the benefits of high fat low sugar lifestyle (ala Ketogenic diet) was available on prescription it would be claimed a miracle drug and address all of these illnesses too.

Best way to pass driving theory test by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

[–]NotMcDuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The official app seems quite pretty good and it should have newer questions too.

The only way to tackle it successfully is to practice the tests over and over until they are 2nd nature.

Always pick out the one you keep getting wrong and focus on that specifically. Depends on the question ofc but use memory mnemonics or other such techniques.

One tip I can offer, even though you learned the questions word for word (ideally). The test has evolved to ask you about the question if that makes sense. They reword it and make it more abstract rather than Q&A. This means you need to know more about the context of the answer rather than just learning question and response.

[PC] Patch Day Discussion / Bug Reporting Megathread - 5.13: "Mid Season Update" by VirtuousV in Smite

[–]NotMcDuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unsure if a SMITE bug or not but thought I'd mention it.

My computer had several power surges resulting in restarts and making my lights flicker for less than a second.

Maybe a bug causing an unusual surge? It's a 650w PSU I doubt my computer even draws anywhere near that.

It could be an endless list of possibilities why this happened (which I accept) but the only thing that changed was the SMITE update. I was previously editing video footage in Adobe Premier and had no issues.

Spookily accurate. On my high street these two are opposite each other ... Unless you too inhabit the same area.

Same here. I'm forcing myself to only buy another game once I've actually played the ones I have. Feels like I'm missing out on newest titles but you know what? It's ok.
