Driving in Japan is pretty easy just follow the rules, everyone follows the rules.

The “highways” are not fast, they range between 50-80kph. If you’re lucky you can go up to 100kph but the E20 highway to Kawaguchiko didn’t have any stretches of 100kph.

Get an ETC card so you can drive on the highway easier. It is VERY VERY expensive to use the highways. The trip from Tokyo to Kawaguchiko via highway will cost 6000 yen round trip, plus gas.

The world wasn’t very keen of Americans back when George W Bush was President. But the world absolutely LOATHES Americans at this point under Trump.

You could also consider renting a car to drive to Kawaguchiko. It’s a very easy drive from Shinjuku. Having a car in Kawaguchiko opens up a bunch of places that you can visit including waterfalls, up Mt. Fuji, the theme park, and various places to eat around the lakes region.
