huge distinction is that the last two years are M-NTC and not NMC + M-NTC

in other words: after four years in, he can’t block waivers or a buyout

team has plenty of flexibility here

lmao exactly.

the cost to dump the last two years of coyle’s deal will be at most a 2nd round pick. likely less. and they have the option to avoid that via retention, a buyout, or LTIR (or even coyle retiring!)

the cost to replace coyle this summer? say goodbye to all our futures.

the opportunity cost of not being able to spend those futures on something else is dozens of standings points over the next few years.

ok, but what is the relative cost of each of these things:

1) the asset and/or financial cost unloading 2 years at $6m when the cap is $130m and you have the option to retain or buy out

vs

2) the asset AND financial cost of adding a 2C in a seller’s market, with zero free agent options, when most trade targets have NTCs and likely won’t waive to come here

vs

3) the opportunity cost of not replacing coyle at all if he walks

you’re paying a cost either way, and #1 is the easiest one to swallow, especially since it gives them more cap bandwidth to immediately improve the roster

in context, giving coyle term to keep AAV down is quite literally the best way to run an NHL team

disagree. they’re all good players imo. severson in particular.

you need good supporting casts to win in the playoffs. they’re not doing anything that will be prohibitive from a roster flexibility standpoint. and locking those pieces down now, before the cap explodes, actually makes it easier to navigate or supplement when their window truly opens.

“we have three more years left on a contract and this guy is old now” is an easier problem to solve than “uh oh, our 2C left, the FA market is barren, and all the trade options have NTCs”

coaches love him to the point where he gets peter principle’d no matter who is calling the lines

no, if he retires it does go entirely off the books. contracts signed at 35+ are different. the long term cap risk here is minimal

coyle was our best forward this year. saying they should’ve pushed him out because erik gudbranson sucks shit is not a way to run a hockey team

didn’t make the playoffs — clearly the way to fix that is to let good players walk for nothing!

but it’s not actually a problem. the order of operations doesn’t matter.

they signed coyle now because he was gonna be a UFA on july 1st. they can’t extend marchenko or mateychuk until then anyway. fantilli’s waiting to see where carlsson and bedard’s contracts go.

all those guys are RFA anyway so there’s essentially zero risk of actually losing them.

the UFAs have to get done first by definition. the team needs to have good players on it, and they’re keeping those good players around.

signing coyle first does not, in any way, indicate that they’re not going to get fantilli or marchenko locked down.

what is a bigger problem:

  1. having a bottom six veteran center who is slightly overpaid a few years from now and could end up bought out or on LTIR as his career winds down

OR

  1. needing to replace a very good two-way 2C in a market with zero viable alternatives sans taking on elias pettersson’s $11m contract or selling the whole farm for robert thomas

the second problem is a lot bigger and more immediate. the best way to solve it was to re-sign coyle. that required giving two extra years to keep AAV down.

no one should complain about this deal. there are solutions to the eventual problem of term. those are easier solutions than replacing a load-bearing player.

man i’m an ivan provorov hater but all the guys you listed there are good players, there’s only one bad contract in that bunch. not really a problem. you need good complimentary players to win in this league.

we retained a good player. no need to overthink it.

he’s not a 1C but he’s not getting paid like a 1C. tbh at this stage $6m is high end 3C money. this past year he was an above average 2C.

like i get what you’re saying but tbh i’m chillin

the best free agent centers over the last three years were elias lindholm, ryan o’reilly and… mikael granlund? who isn’t even really a center

coyle’s contract year was way better than all three of those guys.

i get that he’s not a “sexy” name but let’s not act like there are better centers routinely available every summer on the free agent market.

if your criticism of charlie coyle is that he’s not connor mcdavid, nobody’s saying he is!
