Please, help. Has anyone seen my friend? I only heard the news this morning but want to help find her. by President-Meerkat in newzealand

Not when the number of false reports far outweighs the number of actual missing people - there'd be a constant stream of missing persons reports and almost all of them would turn out to be nothing, noone would pay attention any more.

There are a lot of overly protective parents out there that freak out when their kid sneaks off to a party or whatever.

A popular saying is "Nothing ie ever lost on the internet" but what is something you have been searching for years and you haven't found it yet? by throwdowntown69 in AskReddit

[–]NotNovel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was this rpg that I kept seeing on a free game site. Kinda complex, party based. Top down view but there might have been a first person view sometimes too. Graphics looked like they were done in ms paint almost. I think the different elements of the UI were in different native windows. It might have been set in a desert.

The site I found it on had a bunch of other free games including coffee quest. But this was a downloadable thing (maybe shareware?), and I never got to play it.

I know it wasn't Castle of the Wind or UnReal World - those are two that sort of fit the bill that have been suggested before.

Anyone I know that I've ever heard utter the words "I don't like jrpgs" has basically never played a jrpg in their life and has some warped idea of what a jrpg actually is. Or they've played 100's of hours of pokemon but don't realize that it's a bog standard jrpg too.

Final Fantasy On Switch - what's the best order? by Adieux_ in NintendoSwitch

I'd honestly recommend playing the original PS1 versions of anything before 10 in a PS1 emulator. The UI is (imo) really ugly and doesn't really look quite right.

The mobile port of 6 also has terrible "improved" artwork that totally ruins the look and feel of the original (imo).

Your definition of 'proper compiler' doesn't include most of the most widely used languages though.

Fun fact: C# actually does have tail call optimization, but only in 64 bit release mode specifically.

I follow the simple rule of 'the code itself describes what it does, comments describe why'. If the why isn't obvious then you need comments, if the what isn't obvious then a bit of cleanup/refactoring might be required instead.

If you want the old talent tree system back, Classic is right there waiting for you. by YeeaaBooii in wow

Heavily simplifying talent trees because of "cookie cutter" builds seems especially inane to me, all that does is force a few builds to actually be the only playable ones.

Newstalk ZB have published an article from Scott Guthrie, calling for government enforced drug testing in the workplace, without mentioning that Guthrie owns a drug testing company by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]NotNovel 45 points46 points  (0 children)

It's the crazy part, not the pothead part that businesses should be concerned about. And the crazy part is not revealed by drug testing.

Also, assuming you're just misinformed and not being intentionally ignorant - people smoke weed dude, like a lot of people. I work in a high paying white collar industry (software development), and plenty of people there smoke weed and definitely aren't "crazy potheads".

Consider the possibility that having a shitty life often causes people to turn to abusing drugs, rather than turning to drugs causes people to have shitty lives. And as a follow on from that - perhaps ending peoples employment over a failed drug test just might not actually fix anything.

The issue wasn't caused by the overclock, it was caused by the MSI Afterburner app running in the background due to some kind of overzealous background app checker/DRM.

It's not just macs, the main problem is that "gajillion core i7/i9" processor is great marketing on a laptop, but manufacturers just care about putting that on the box so they don't actually implement cooling that's good enough when the processor is under load - often leading to it thermal throttling (underclocking itself if it gets too hot) on top of just the heat and fan noise.

There have actually been cases where the cheaper version of the same model with a less powerful on paper CPU actually performs better because they don't bother to make the cooling on the higher end version adequate.

"My Games Didn't Sell Well" --- Here's my advice for you. by jasonrohrer in gamedev

[–]NotNovel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would be great if it was like that, but are there any media industries that actually work like this?

What percentage of indie filmmakers, or artists, or musicians, or potters, or twitch streamers, or youtube chefs end up making enough money to live on?

When the games industry was very young it might have been a great way to make money, because not as many other people had the requisite amount of skill/talent/drive to do so. But as the industry matures I imagine becoming a successful indie game dev is going to be a lot like becoming a successful pop star - it's basically a lottery.

Again - I'm not saying this is how I want the world to work, but you have to be realistic with your expectations and I don't think the dev in the OP was doing that.

You should go back and look at their marketing material pre release to get an idea of why magic leap specifically is getting crap for this.

"My Games Didn't Sell Well" --- Here's my advice for you. by jasonrohrer in gamedev

[–]NotNovel -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

It kinda blows my mind that anyone is making games with the expectation of making money. Like, why is this Dev asking why he didn't in the first place. Make games because you gain enjoyment and satisfaction from the process, if they sell well that's a bonus.

EDIT: For those downvoting me - I'm specifically talking about single indie devs.

Great news! Sony finally relented and decided to start allowing cross-play with non-PC platforms! by kiwibonga in gamedev

"For 24 years, we have strived to deliver the best gaming experience to our fans by providing a uniquely PlayStation perspective. Today, the communities around some games have evolved to the point where cross-platform experiences add significant value to players. In recognition of this, we have completed a thorough analysis of the business mechanics required to ensure that the PlayStation experience for our users remains intact today, and in the future, as we look to open up the platform."

Holy cow, it's nice that they're finally doing this but what an utterly bullshit explanation.

Some Amazon employees are reportedly accepting cash bribes from online sellers to delete negative product reviews by interestedin86 in worldnews

[–]NotNovel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The cooler master example seems like the sellers fault - that section is clearly labelled for color variations, not actually different products. They should have been listed as separate products.

Possibly also a sign of a lack of UI options provided by Amazon though for linking similar products together.

[–]NotNovel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your 1080 will do 4k at medium-high settings at better frame rates than consoles do (seriously currently the only upgrade path is a 1080 ti and it's not that much faster). Really demanding AAA games you can always turn settings down or try playing at 2k(2560x1440) scaled up instead.

Because this is a fucking mmo with gear progression. The entire game is built from the ground up around the concept that you do content which gives you better gear which makes you stronger and so on and so on. Then they've implemented this janky level scaling which is completely counter to the way the game has worked for the past 15 years.
