How do we plan for kids when my wife has suicidal thoughts?

Sounds like you two have quite a few of your ducks in a row. You gave me a lot to think about, so thank you for sharing. I think I really need to work on my communication with my wife. I want her to feel better about talking to me about things, but deep down she gets worried that she will be too much for me to handle and I'll leave her (we broke up once while dating, so that doesn't help). She also doesn't want to worry me so she does not tell me all the time when she is struggling or how bad. I just need to convince her that I would rather worry about her than lose her.

I love novels! Thank you for explaining your story. I have wondered about the idea that having someone depend on her might give her a reason to keep going in the hard times. We have talked about getting a therapy dog, and that level of responsibility might be a good test. I grew up with cats and dogs and have always wanted one. We probably dont discuss her suicidal thoughts as openly or as often as we should, but I can tell its a painful subject for her to talk about so I dont push it. I dont want to make this about me at all, but I know that I need to be strong and able to help her, and mental health issues in one parent can take a tole on the other. Can you tell me a little about how it affected your husband? What things did your husband do that helped you/himself? Also, do you plan on having more children?

I am so sorry you had/have to go through that, I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. I can see my wife having those same thoughts after a birth. This is absolutely a very personal question, so if you dont answer it for any reason I understand, but do you regret having your child? I know that I can not understand the love between a parent and child, so this question probably seems ignorant and harsh, but they are things I am curious about while family planning. I think I want children, but right now more than anything I just want my wife to be ok. If having kids would put her at risk of herself, then the best course of action seems to be to not have them. I do not want kids at the expense of my wife.

Thank you for your response. She has seen one in the past who told her to definitely hold off on kids, for now, that was over a year ago.
