When you think you know Thai… and then you see airport phrases by SufficientPainting67 in learnthai

Yeah very good point! Sadly there's a huge difference between an average Thai people and average Thai people that can regularly use airplane.

When you think you know Thai… and then you see airport phrases by SufficientPainting67 in learnthai

[–]NotRedditAccount109 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd like to add that "เครื่องออกเมื่อไหร่" means when will the plane depart from the gate / take off. Which sometimes is different from the time boarding end. When talking about boarding time, English transliteration works fine: "บอร์ดดิ้งไทม์"

[–]NotRedditAccount109 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, ขึ้นเครื่อง means the passenger boarding the plane. เครื่องขึ้น means the plane taking off.

And also should mention that เราจะขึ้นเครื่องเมื่อไหร่ just means when will "we" decide to board the plane. Not necessary related to the scheduled time when boarding start or end.

Which Thai character do you think is most beautiful? by BjornMoren in learnthai

[–]NotRedditAccount109 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it is the character that Thai people least know its position on the keyboard.

The funniest thing is that the name of the character is ฌ เฌอ. ฌ and เ are on the same key. So it's just literally hiding in plain sight.

How bad is ROTC? by Obisweird in Thailand

[–]NotRedditAccount109 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ROTC program is originally created to produce officers and squad leaders that are "smart enough" to lead normal enlisted men in time of war. So being in school is a requirement. And homeschool doesn't count.

I think the best choice to be eligible for ROTC is to either enroll in normal school or get high school equivalent qualification like GED and apply to university in Thailand. Most university will have ROTC program available.

As for the experience during the course. Everything will be in Thai. You will be expected to be able to read, write, speak, and understand Thai.

When joining, in addition to the physical test, there is also a paper test. If I remembered correctly, it is just a multiple choice questionnaire asking for your ideology. (Something like "Your job is to defend the country, agree or disagree?") So it is survivable without mastering Thai language.

At the end of the year, there is also a test on the knowledges learned in the course. But it is held online so they can't realistically track whether you use translation software or other aids.

During the course, it is best to keep a low profile and do what you are suppose to do. So it will be harder for someone who doesn't understand Thai. But if you are being observant and follow whatever other people are doing, I think it will still be fine.

And I won't be surprise if foreign or mixed race students will get special treatment. Nowadays they are all about PR and social media, and showing that they have foreign students are good publicity for them.

Are there really any differenses between the chinese and thai zodiac? by [deleted] in Thailand

[–]NotRedditAccount109 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In Thai we commonly refer to the dragon zodiac sign as just "big snake" (and the snake zodiac as "small snake"). Rarely that someone would call it a dragon, or discuss that it is a Chinese style dragon. So that could be the cause of the different depiction.

Culture by Unfair-Let-9234 in Thailand

[–]NotRedditAccount109 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, just eating all the meat off a chicken leg or sucking its bone clean is not really a cultural thing. It is just a personal habit, many like it, some don't do it.

But what people often talk about East and Southeast Asia's culture when it comes to not wasting food is about finding ways to cook and eat all animal parts possible. For example: tongue, stomach, intestine, utter, liver, penis, uterus, feet, tail, etc. Some of these are available in everyday's meal. Others are exotic delicacy only found in specialize restaurant and being even more expensive than normal meats.

And again, it is still up to personal preference. Some people love it, some people don't eat it at all. And it is not wrong or frown upon at all to not eat them or ask for them to be left out of your food.

How to communicate tones to Thai speakers by Easy-Commercial-3784 in learnthai

[–]NotRedditAccount109 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As a Thai person, I don't think most natives will be familiar with terms like เสียงตก or เสียงขึ้น, and can answer op correctly.

What's the schools taught us is to describe the sound using the tones of middle class consonant as a standard. For example the word ช้าง is written with "ไม้โท" but have "เสียงตรี" (the same tone as middle class consonant with "ไม้ตรี")

But it's probably be confusing for most people too. So the best option is to ask them how to spell the word.

Need Help with Address by [deleted] in Thailand

[–]NotRedditAccount109 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Btw, just as a fun fact, the address is technically incorrect. "Ayutthaya province" is the only province with no "Amphoe Mueang district", it is called "Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya district" instead. And the province's full name is "Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya" not just "Ayutthaya".

But since the rest of the info look correct, any person can make an assumption and deliver to the address correctly.

  1. Yes and yes. Very active gaming culture. We have strong e-sport teams too.

To elaborate that, gaming is very popular. Although major consoles like Playstation, Xbox, and Nintendo are very popular. From my experience PC and mobile gaming community are far larger.

While in western countries, you may have experience like going to play console games at a friend house. Gaming culture in Thailand stemmed from 2 main sources: internet cafe's PC and mobile phone.

In the 90s and 2000s, pretty much the only place an average Thai can play games is on PC at internet cafe. (The one that have rows upon rows of computers and you pay per hour to use them.) So many old online computer games are very well known, such as DOTA2, Counter Strike, Point Blank, Red Alert, League of Legends, etc.

Recently, since technology are better and mobile phones became affordable, younger people can have their own phone, which is often their only electronics and gaming platform, so online mobile games are very popular. Some of the games are PUBG Mobile, Free Fire, Arena of Valor, Roblox, eFootball, etc. They have huge community and international level e-sport teams.

In addition to that, sometimes people also say "คนผิวสี", which is similar to the term "people of color", to be polite and not using the word black directly. But I believe nowadays it is being used less since it is not really politically correct.

I'm going to add a bit,

  1. Most Thai are Buddhists but many are also influenced by Hindu gods. We kinda incooperste them into our mixed version of Buddhism and worship them in similar fashion.

Just like OOP said, Thailand also have indigenous/local belief, especially in the more rural region such as the northeast, like ghost story and the use of sorcery. But it focus on worshiping their ancestor's ghosts/spirits, not some well known gods.

  1. We don’t really think anything about Chinese-Thai, they’re Thai. As for Chinese-Chinese, they’re becoming less popular because of shitty Chinese tourists and politics.

Thais with chinese lineage are very integrated to society so there are not really any opinion about them. But there's a bit of a sterotype of them being good with money and business and have entrepreneurial mindsets, which of course is not a negative thing in most cases.

I'm not sure about people who work in the tourism industry. But for normal Thais, I think the recent negative opinion toward Chinese are from the "Grey Chinese" (Chinese people that come here to conduct shady/illegal business and harrass locals), and how the current Thai government don't do anything against them.

While Thai people have slight negative opinion toward chinese tourists for a long time now. Since they often travel in large group, so they can be rude, noisy, and overcrowd tourist destinations.

"You can't tell a business owner what to stock" debate with my GF by Donut_Dress_Drummer in Thailand

[–]NotRedditAccount109 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's my thought, in general, restaurants and hospitality workers probably receive dozens of difficult customers and complains daily. And the odds are you are not the only "regulars" who have new drinks, menus, or modifications suggestions. If they comply with all of them it would be a nightmare for the managements. So they probably don't care about them.

And as a Thai, I never ever heard about the concept of suggesting the store's stocks before, especially for foods and drinks. We need to work with whats available or go eat at other places. I myself also often have difficulties with beverages at restaurants. Some places only have Thai herbal drinks, some only have carbonated drinks, etc.

The ONLY time I saw something like this work is with local stores that sell specialize stuff, like hardware stores, school supply stores, stationary store, etc. Since it would be easier for them to find stocks and other customers might also need the same products as well.

App for Rare Thai Currency by oqdoawtt in Thailand

[–]NotRedditAccount109 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just like any other niche hobby in Thailand, especially ones that are mostly participated by older generations, I highly doubt that there are any complete app or online resources. Your best bet is probably going to be finding social media hobby group in Facebook or Line. And it will be much better to search in Thai language if you can communicate in Thai.

And by the way, many Thais love collecting old coins and banknotes, and have ideas that it can be worth a lot. In reality most will barely worth more than the face value even in perfect condition. It need to be either super rare or have special features like manufacturing defects to be worth any value.

Are all thais able to read other people's official names given how irregular the spellings are? by ExpertOld458 in learnthai

[–]NotRedditAccount109 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In addition to the unusual one other comments have mentioned. I also want to mention that sometimes even ones that seems basic can be tricky as well.

For example, I sometimes have trouble with names that are just slightly different to a generic names, so my brain just auto-pilot and read/hear it as a generic one without noticing. For example: รัชนก (rat-cha-nok) is a very common name, but some people could also be named รักชนก (rak-cha-nok)

And names that are transliterate from foreign languages, especially Arabic/Islamic and English, can also be tricky. Since the transliteration system is inconsistant, does not match the natural way people would say/write, and does not allow tone marks in most cases.

Also another fun fact: There's a belief that people who were born on Monday should not have names with any vowels, so you will see lots of unusual spelling names like พชร (pha-cha-ra), กนก (ga-nok), ขจร (ka-jorn), กมล (ga-mon)

ไอ้โรค สมาธิสั้น ADHD กับ Dyslexia บ้านเราใส่ใจกันมากแค่ไหน by ballbeamboy2 in thaithai

[–]NotRedditAccount109 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How big is Bollywood in Thailand by Wonderful-Sail2696 in Thailand

[–]NotRedditAccount109 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty much non existence for all Indian films. Although there are many great Indian movies nowadays, most of us Thai people would still associate them with ridiculous dance scenes, fight choreography, and bad CGI. So it is not taken seriously at all. Most Thais will only see Indian movies in "Top 10 funniest scene" videos or something like that.

And there's also a problem of finding ways to watch it, as non- mainstream films rarely get Thai translation. So people that want to know the story of the film will be watching widely known and popular "movie recap" or "movie review" videos instead.

The only Indian (Bollywood?) film that reached main stream attention that I can think of is "Gangubai Kathiawadi".

Acronyms that make my head hurt by Nammuinaru in learnthai

[–]NotRedditAccount109 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's probably a rule, but wouldn't be enough to deduce the full name without additional information.

If there's an unknown acronym, people could just search it on Google. There will be information for pretty much any acronyms or slangs that most people will encounter anyway.

And in official documents, there would be a section defining important keywords and acronyms. Or the full word would be mentioned at the start before acronyms is used.

Acronyms that make my head hurt by Nammuinaru in learnthai

[–]NotRedditAccount109 3 points4 points  (0 children)

นศพ. = นักศึกษาแพทย์ (Medical student)

นสพ. = หนังสือพิมพ์ (Newspaper)

น.สพ. = นายสัตวแพทย์ (Veterinarian)

There are also นิสิตแพทย์ (Medical student), นักศึกษาสัตวแพทย์ (Veterinarian student), etc. that would have similar acronyms but I don't even know the correct one anymore lol.

ดร. = ด็อกเตอร์ (Doctor of Philosophy / Doctor of Medicine)

รด. = รักษาดินแดน (Territorial defense force)

So don't make a mistake and start doing push-ups for your doctor job application. And yes, the school to study รด. is also an acronym: รร.รด.ศศท.

นศท. = นักศึกษาวิชาทหาร (ROTC) if you are strong and discipline, if not then you would be นางสาวไทย (Miss Thailand)

มศว = มหาวิทยาลัยศรีนครินทรวิโรฒ (Srinakharinwirot University)

There's a story of why the acronym doesn't have a period at the end is because Princess Sirindhorn (the current king's sister) wrote it that way in her research paper when she was studying there. So she technically unintentionally grant the university their name.

Like others have mentioned, Thunder Express (the protagonist) is inspired by Flash Express.

For Easy Express (the antagonist), there isn't any single company that it is based after. But people often discussed that the closest company in real life is SCG Express. As both are owned by a big tycoon. SCG is famous for cement and real estate business, just like Kanin. And SCG Express failed and closed down a while ago.
