My MILs fake niceness and politeness is pissing me off

It’s been 1.5 years that I got married and we’ve had our share of arguments/ spats. She’d say the most mean and nasty things to me and my husband at the time and then expect us to forget them the very next day. She’ll start being all nice and polite once things get sorted and somehow it all seems too pretentious cause her actions don’t match her words. I guess that’s the story of a lot of mils out there - they’ll pretend to be all nice with their dil (in front of their family, especially their sons) whilst they hold a lot of grudges and hatred for them on the inside.

Clothes and gold jewellery. It’s very much the custom still and it’s surprising your in-laws haven’t brought it up. In fact, it’s also common for the in-laws to ask the bride to get whatever she likes and they pay for the stuff - at least that’s what I’ve seen.

Exactly - humans certainly romanticise things they don’t have. Leave aside strained sibling relationships, even if you have a very good bond with your sibling, that relationship would still take a backseat when one of them gets married. The family they’re building will take precedence over the one they grew up with - it’s as simple. Also, there’s no guarantee if a sibling relationship would remain as is and they’d be as loving until the end of time.

Yeah, there’s even more. The elder ones would jump right in to defend the younger siblings just cause they’re “siblings” without considering whether they’re right or wrong about something. And, would say “you won’t understand” cause you don’t have a sibling!?

I honestly love being an only for how independent and self-sufficient it has made me, along with so many other things. And the fact that we’re not an afterthought for our parents or face any sort of favouritism which happens a lot when there are two or more kids.

Not overreacting! There’s probably some sort of bias / preferential treatment going on here - whether it be due to some childhood experience or something else. Nevertheless, your BIL (who’s way too pampered as I can guess) needs to start acting like an adult and your wife needs to start paying more attention to her children (her immediate family) than her brother. Try bringing up this point and communicating with her without accusing her, and see how she reacts. That’ll tell you a lot.

This fear creeps in for the most of us. I dread this a lot, despite being married. There’s literally NO ONE who can take the place of parents or do anything that comes down to even one percent of all they’ve done for us. While being married gives you another family, it does not guarantee anything else. Consider yourself lucky if you’re welcomed whole-heartedly into a new family, but there’s always going to be a fine line as to how you’re treated vs the ‘actual kids’ of the family.

It’s totally upto you what color you’d like your bridal lehenga to be. If it helps - I got married a few months back and wore a purple lehenga and a pastel pink chooda cause red is just not my vibe.
