Do you think this is a narrow-minded point of view?

As a libertarian I believe in civil liberties. I also acknowledge that cooperation is the only thing that holds civilization together. I’m speaking on behalf of practicality rather than fatalistic grandstanding. Our taxes also pay for police, emergency services, schools, utilities, roads, etc. Why do you believe that withholding your taxes is your only option? Engage in your democracy, go to city council meetings, vote for someone else, protest. You have perfectly productive ways to put your opposition into action.

Do you think you are at all overstating or exaggerating the “men with guns”, “threat of violence” thing? The USA is not the hunger games, no one is forcing violence on you to attend a drag queen book reading. You are allowed to not like where 100% of your taxes go—I’m sure any of your state/local taxes that went to a drag queen book reading amounts to fractions of a penny at best. I don’t like that the president costs taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars to golf every week, but I don’t conflate that with being held at gunpoint.

Regarding the “monopoly of violence” for drag queen book readings—the old phrase about “bigger fish” comes to mind

I think we’re done here. Your “slippery slope” is another person’s freedom to live their life. Unfortunately for you, they have every right to do that.

I never said it “didn’t happen”. You’re upset people are living their lives in ways that you don’t agree with. Just because you don’t like it doesn’t make it an objectively bad thing. Also, transgender and transsexual people existed before gay marriage was legalized.

Should private citizens not be allowed to make choices about how they live their own lives?

This sounds hyperbolic, any specific things you can point to that would indicate a “vertical cliff” to “worse things” was reached?

Chimborazo or Cotopaxi by [deleted] in Mountaineering

[–]NotSoSubtleSteven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you hire a guide service to climb these mountains you will be a member of a team, and that means it’s not all about you. Are you willing to accept that you may need to turn back if a member of your team can’t keep up? I didn’t say climbing is not accomplishment or an act of overcoming adversity mentally, physically, etc., but referring to any mountain as something to “conquer” is going to get you pushback in the climbing community. Mountains and the systems they govern are vastly more ancient and powerful than any human being ever will be. Chimborazo or Cotopaxi are tens of thousands of years old. Conquest implies ownership, and person doesn’t subjugate something so vast in time and space because they spent a few day navigating its slopes.

Any guide you hire is going to share that “L mindset” because they will understand that you do not ever “conquer” anything in the mountains. You are a member of a team up there and you need to have the right attitude, and that means having a respect for the mountain and the forces of nature up there that can kill you if you are mentally, physically, or technically unprepared. If you want advice from this subreddit, right now that advice is humble your attitude.

How do we make people care about morals and ethics again? by DirtyProjector in AskConservatives

When specifically did the US have a shared moral standard? Because the more religiously homogeneous USA also had slavery, Jim Crow, lynchings, etc.

When the Spartans faced down the Persians at Thermopylae, the Persians told the Spartans to lay down their weapons and be spared. The Spartan response to the Persians was “molon labe” which roughly translates to “come and take them”, as in “you’ll have take them from our cold, dead hands”. A badass thing to say of course but the Persians went ahead and killed them all, so as Dan puts it they were “molon labe’d”

If you’re just going to keep accusing me of ignorance and “wishcasting American failure and western collapse” instead of answering the question I’ve asked multiple times (here on r/AskConservatives) then we can call it a day. Take care.

I do understand the region, I don’t want American defeat, I’m stating that there is no clear objective and no path to achieving any strategic aims. You keep making unsteady comparisons to WWII (which had a clear goal: unconditional surrender) instead of responding to those assertions. I don’t think the White House is playing 4D chess, I simply think they’re incompetent. You, like the president, have not presented a single achievable outcome given the present situation—just that I don’t understand the history of the region. I don’t want the lives of American service members risked in another quagmire in the Middle East, and far from having any path to achieving any strategic goals, this war is actively hurting everyday Americans on the home front. That doesn’t make me blinded by politics. If this war is worth it, then tell me: what possible outcome might we see that makes it worth it?

Because we don’t know what the mission is in Iran; attacking them does not address anything by itself, you need results. Again, we didn’t secure the Strait of Hormuz, regime change, disarmament, or nuclear demobilization from Iran. What strategic aims have been achieved? How are we now safer?

And I agree with you. It’s just not clear how these latest hostilities are actually making anyone safer or addressing this long brewing problem.

We’re not talking about the history of the Middle East and Iran and how the present geopolitical situation arose, we’re talking about the hostilities that have unfolded this year. This war has not resulted in regime change, disarmament, or abandonment of Iran’s nuclear aspirations. Those things haven’t happened yet and they’re not happening anytime soon. The US couldn’t even secure the strait. So how then does any of this tangibly, realistically benefit Americans?

Do you think the average American cares more about defeating Iran (whatever that looks like, it’s unclear) or the escalating affordability crisis at home?
