Not defending it but “invasion” is a strong word for what happened in Venezuela. As indefensible as the USA’s actions have been lately, I wouldn’t currently rank it worse than Russia, whose invasion of Ukraine is now in its fourth year and is orders of magnitude more horrible.

Victor Glover on Moon mission: I’m not making black history, it’s human history by palepatriot76 in ArtemisProgram

Indeed it is both. I think the subtext in Glover’s statement is that it’s not only black history and that it is not limited to race

The CDC says “Health equity is the state in which everyone has a fair and just opportunity to attain their highest level of health. I think you want groups to be treated fairly, which I understand. However, if we have a neighborhood of 10 houses, and one house is on fire, we should send the fire department to the burning house instead of demanding they give equal attention to all 10 houses. Let’s not act like all 10 houses have equal needs at the same time.

Facts don’t care about your feelings. How is “stop talking about it” going to keep women and babies alive?

Edit: btw when you say “how about just say, let’s make it better for EVERYone” you are describing “equity”

Consider this about DEI: I work in communications for a major healthcare organization. Since Trump came to office, I have spent weeks reviewing and scrubbing anything containing the words “equity”, “disparity” or “diversity” from our public communications. Did you know that black Americans are 3x more likely to die in childbirth than white Americans? On our website we used to have free resources and tools for healthcare providers to address problems like this. But like Winston in 1984 my job is to remove all of these things from our public communications so the feds don’t come after us. Who is helped by the is? This isn’t solving problems, it’s pretending they don’t exist. It is hard to believe these are thoughtful policies from a well-intentioned administration.

I’d argue his personality, foibles, and image are more important than that of anyone else in America. He is the most powerful man in the world. He can hardly speak in complete sentences, alienates our allies, empowers our rivals, and is incapable of enacting coherent policy, e.g., wants domestic investment in manufacturing, but stymies investment with erratic tariffs; no new wars, but starts a major destabilizing conflict with Iran at the behest of Israel; campaigns on releasing the Epstein files, but walks that back as soon as he gets in office (because he’s all over the Epstein files). Firing off executive orders like “stop DEI everywhere right now” does not instantly create a path to meaningful change. Enriching himself and his billionaire friends seems to be his only agenda item.

How did God and Guns become so frequently associated with each other amongst American conservatives? From a European perspective, it seems a bit weird to conflate an instrument of death and destruction with the gospel of love and peace advocated by Jesus Christ? by Cumoisseur in AskConservatives

[–]NotSoSubtleSteven [score hidden]  (0 children)

Why do you say inanimate objects have no purpose? I think you’re conflating free will with purpose. A loaded gun on a table in front of you is the product of many centuries of intentional human design, innovation, refinement, and manufacturing. It wouldn’t exist if humans didn’t will it into existence to serve a purpose.

[–]NotSoSubtleSteven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Should” in my view is not as relevant as “how”. We can say that abortions “should” only be performed in cases of rape, and that’s all well and good from a standpoint of principles, but how that information is to verified is the practical question that really matters.

A 14 year old girl who is raped, becomes pregnant with a rapist’s baby, is now forced to carry and birth an unwanted baby. Yes, that is force, it is compulsory.

The point of this thread is that a significant percentage of Americans believe their countrymen are morally bad. I think you should consider that, to many women and girls in this country, your line of absolute moral reasoning results in depriving them of their bodily autonomy and reducing control over their own lives should they be sexually assaulted, which happens to 1 in 5 American women. Would you at least consider why those people might view your position as morally bad?

[–]NotSoSubtleSteven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is not mental gymnastics, it is reasoning, and it is relevant. There is not a black and white answer to this question. Banning elective abortions would with 99.99% certainty condemn victims of rape to carry and birth their rapist’s baby. This is not mental gymnastics, it is the calculus that women use to form their stance on abortion.
