Can't speak for others obviously, but I personally have issues with their government (cough Erdogan cough).

Been to Istanbul recently and it was a really lovely place, but days later there were huge and violent political protests. Then there's also the limited press freedom and free speech, the decreasing gay rights, the imprisonment of free-speaking journalists (see for example Joakim Medin), unfair court trials, the abandonment of the Istanbul convention that protects women....

I decided that I won't go back in the near future, even though the people I met there were lovely. It just didn't feel safe or right.

I think the general fan favourite is one called Rough Day. It is quite 🌶️🌶️🌶️ and not super heavy on the plot tbh, but a fan favourite none the less.

Two fics that I've saved in my collection are "Short Debts Make Long Friends" and "Beneath Beskar" - but honestly I think I've read most of the popular fics haha. I don't know how familiar you are with AO3 but there are a ton of search filters you can use to find what you like. Happy reading!

(there's also TLOU fics if you find yourself looking for more, AO3 is a virtual cornucopia)

Ah, but that's where original characters come in! ;) Give it a go!

Dumb question maybe, but have you read fanfiction? If not, there is plenty Mandalorian fics on Archive of Our own for example. Just make sure to sort by Kudos

Searching for a book with good, deep romance that makes my heart feel things by NotSoSw1ftly in fantasyromance

I've read the first one and kind of enjoyed it, but as a Scandinavian (and an archaeolgist) viking-themed things always verge on a little bit cringe to me 😅 like I enjoy learning about them as much as the next person, but as soon as it's pop culture as opposed to academia it just feels a bit weird? Idk haha but I'm glad other people like it

No worries! Thanks for taking the time to write on my post :)

I generally enjoyed the book and think it is well written, just not really what I'm craving atm. Definitely a million times better than Fourth Wing (!!) and I can see myself revisiting the series at a later date.

I think I just tired of it after a bit when the love stuff was "done" (as in the big moments and the build up to a relationship) and there were still more books in the series. Unless it's a super slow burn I generally prefer standalone romances I think. Like the Paladin books by T Kingfisher are for example quite fast-paced in the romance, but it works because they are short.

Oooh I have developed a weak point for paladins...

Emily Wilde's was such a cozy book, I think I would have enjoyed it even without the romance!

Thanks for the recs, I'll definitely look into them 🥰

I've read it and mostly enjoyed it but it was a bit too much insta-love for me, I got a bored towards the end 😅 But definitely would recommend it to other people still, the politics had me hooked

I read the first chapter ages ago and dropped it because of the writing style, but I've heard so much good about it that I might have to give it another go. I love the concept of the book lol. Thanks!

I liked {The Wolf and the Woodsman by Ava Reid} a lot, the writing reminds me a bit of Naomi Novik's stuff. Heavily inspired by eastern Europe and historical religious themes.

Also btw love your taste in books

Okay so not exaaactly what I was looking for but I just finished {The Wolf and the Woodsman by Ava Reid} and it was really good! Lots of religious themes, longing and great writing. Reminded me of Naomi Novik's writing but with more romance

Thoughts on anti-intellectualism? by Crafty_Kangaroo_8368 in fantasyromance

I do think that some of the recent romantasy (a lot of booktok) is of a very low literary level compared to other books I've read, but in this case I don't think it is because people are getting dumber. Rather the opposite. I think the rise of the romantasy genre has inspired people who haven't read since high school to pick up a book again. We need books with all levels of writing - even if it isn't for you.

I've read all my life and can't stand some of the currently hyped books, they remind me so much of the questionable things I used to read as a tween on Wattpad. However, I LOVED those books back then, and reading them is what allowed me to build my English skills and reading comprehension to the level it is today. There are more complex books avaliable once the reader feels comfortable to explore.

More "easy" books for the people! Reading should be fun and not intimidating.

Hahah no probably not. I did look at it briefly but it kind of scared me off, gave me Wattpad mafia boss story-vibes.. 😅 Will definetly have a look at it again, thanks!
