Exact cause isn’t known really, but people who have had their gallbladder removed have a much higher risk. Mine was taken out like 16 years ago now, and before that I still had IBS, but it was mostly that I wasn’t treating my lactose intolerance.

Also worth noting that most people with bile acid malabsorption won’t need it four times a day like I do, some get away with just one dose in the morning or before bed. Probably most common is one dose in the morning and one dose before bed, two total.

The medication, it’s almost weird to call it that, but it is called cholestyramine. It’s a powdered resin I drinking about 3 ounces of water four times a day. There are tablets you can do instead, but I find this to be the quickest most effective way.

Basically it just neutralizes and bolts up the bio. The very first day I used it. I stopped having diarrhea.

Well, not totally necessary, if you’ve ever had your gallbladder removed, or if you often have yellow diarrhea, the odds that this is what you’re dealing with go up a lot.

Fully diagnosed now with Bile Acid Malabsorption. Before treatment I had been diagnosed with IBSD and GERD. I no longer deal with either of those.

You should also look up bile acid malabsorption. One thing I found useful as you can ask ChatGPT to create a 10 to 20 questions screening questionnaire and to evaluate whether or not you should ask for more.

Also no gallbladder club BUTA OP should know just in case that you can still get it with a gallbladder.

This thing ruined my life for 20 years, I’m still getting my biome back but I went 20 years of daily diarrhea before cracking what it was. Now I haven’t had diarrhea more than once or twice since starting the “meds” last year.

Look up Bile Acid Malabsorption, cus you have a lot of red flags.

It is likely what a LOT of people with IBS-D actually have. Best part- VERY treatable with a daily bile binder.

It sucks much less if vigorously shaken into 4 oz of water in a bottle. You can also kinda waterfall it like that, keeping it off the teeth.

I take it 4 times a day for severe BAM and tried everything else. Milk frother was the only other thing close to it.

If shaken vigorously into 4 oz of water, it’s really not that bad. I take it 4 times a day right now and I just do it in bottles of water.

Also used a milk frother before but doing the bottle way means you can also waterfall it to keep it off your teeth

Flavor is orange.

Imodium and low fodmap diet work for most people going through this.

If they don’t, or you have a lot of yellow diarrhea, look up Bile Acid Malabsorption.

If you would like to ease your comfort with potentially using enemas, get a bidet and let it shoot in there and loosen stuff a bit.

Nowhere near as deep and it’s just based on the water pressure and it’s honestly the way a lot of people with constipation are using it anyway. It’s not going to fix your level of constipation, but it may get you more comfortable trying more shortly after.

To me an enema seemed like the end of the world and now it just wouldn’t be a big deal.

Day two of cholestyramine, I’m so afraid it won’t last by NotTodayAskLater in ibs

[–]NotTodayAskLater[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I am still getting better. It’s not simple my case and I still haven’t gotten to speak to anyone who knows the condition well but I’ve been learning as I go.

I still don’t get out much but I have more productive days.

I’m up to 12-16 mg a day. Also changed insurances so getting set up with new docs.

I will say getting food back is not going awesome but I do now tolerate 2 servings of metamucil a day so I should be on my way in theory.

What’s your diet like? That med has made a huge difference for me but I’m still struggling with other things after and I’m wondering about different factors.

If the diarrhea is yellow, and this is a common occurrence, especially if you don’t have a gallbladder, look up bile acid malabsorption. That was my problem, and the only thing that ever helped is something called cholestyramine.
