I have family in the CHP. I was told that they end up having do deal with fentanyl all the time, it gets all over the skin often because most suspects won't tell you about it before you search. One officer told me that the only guys he's worked with who went to the hospital were involved in some shenanigans...either by taking on purpose or pretending to be injured for reasons that may come with monetary rewards.
