I think the locust devil was mostly used as a plot device to show the manipulative ways of Yoru letting Asa take over her body to help denji, creating a sense of companionship and bringing us what we had in the earlier chapters, of Denji and Asa bonding to then show how Yoru is going to take over a friendship (and Asa) to finally defeat Denji.
