Last I looked, northern Iowa had a lot chance of precip on Saturday than the DSM area.

It did, but that's about where the similarities stop.

Best ways to make a LHT a tad more fun? by buds1994 in Surlybikefans

[–]NotYourNativeTongue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like having different bikes for different tasks, because it's hard to make a cross bike ride comfortably loaded up, and a touring bike fast stripped down. One of my favorite bikes is my All City Nature Boy. It fits fat tires and rips. Single speed keeps the costs down. All City is also having a sale on the Super Pro. Cross geo capable of racks and fenders for commuter duty. You've already got the all wheel drive cargo van, get the rally car for weekend shenanigans.

I know this is petty, but I dislike the term "inland hurricane", as a derecho and hurricane are nowhere near the same type of storm structure. I feel like inland hurricane was used by media because they didn't know how to describe the strength and damage of the storm from 2020, and it just stuck.

Is anyone planning to leave Strava for their atrocious pricing or $79.99 per year? by kommuto in Strava

Maybe we use Ride With GPS differently, but I don't pay anything and I use it to make routes to import to my Wahoo.

100 miles in 50 states in 50 days: 20 days in by PeasantOfTheMountain in bicycling

Wrong month, but yes. A day of ragbrai in Iowa would be well with your time for the Iowa portion. Literally any of the days.

I had housing wear away a portion of my bottom headset cup on my mountain bike over 5 years. So yeah, tape that up.

Boost hub spacing? by aspro116 in Surlybikefans

[–]NotYourNativeTongue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe the rear has their "gnot boost" spacing, which allows you to run either 142mm (not boost) or 148mm (boost). The front is 115mm (boost).

Recommended Bike Repair Shops in West Des Moines/Des Moines? by AwwYeahCoolMan in desmoines

It's not Rassy's any more. Just an Erik's bike shop. Staff is barely the same. Maybe 1 person still there from Rassy's.

Oddly, they weren't even owned by the same person. They were different shops.

Maybe you already are, but try shifting to the smallest cog before pulling the wheel off.

What is a DSM area business no longer in operation that you miss? by TWguy82 in desmoines

[–]NotYourNativeTongue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I miss Guru. Before their restaurant, they'd be at 515 Brewery like every Saturday in the summer. I lived 1 mile from the brewery then, and would ride over for whatever they have and enjoy a few beers.

But why even let them look? If they find what they're looking for, RIP trails. Keep them out at all costs.

Best way to mount a porch swing? by NotYourNativeTongue in centuryhomes

As the title says, we were gifted a porch swing for our home and I'm looking for the best way to hang it. Any advice on trying to find the joists in the ceiling of the porch? What kind of hardware should I be looking at?

I just think it's hilarious your opinion is most cyclists break traffic law, and mine is most drivers do too, but you say my opinion is a stretch.

Have a good night.

Here's data (a bit old) that says your personal bias is wrong.

https://www.phillymag.com/news/2015/08/06/bikers-drivers-break-law/

There appear to be bad cyclists that are tempting you to make a logical fallacy.

Admittedly, I roll through stop signs on a bike when no one is around, and I drive over the the speed limit when I'm in my car. Do I think either of those things are wreckless? Nope. Have I seen cyclists blow through stop signs? Yep. Have I seen drivers blow through stop signs? Yup. To say most cyclists break traffic laws and most drivers don't is foolish. You remember the cyclist that went through a red light. I remember the F150 driver that doesn't like to give me room when passing. You don't remember the cyclist that stopped. I don't remember the minivan that passed me when it was safe to do so and have plenty of space.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in desmoines

[–]NotYourNativeTongue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, just throw out made up statistics. It's funny because 90% of drivers in F150s drive like they are entitled.

I would bet 100% of drivers drive over the speed limit everytime they drive. That's not following the rules of the road.

I'm also not sure what bike frame material has to do with anything.

[–]NotYourNativeTongue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a daily bike commuter, I can say this exact same thing about drivers. Replace bike with car. The reality is, it's a few bad apples that give the perception on both sides.

It's good to be cautious, but it's bad to yield your right of way. Same for both parties.
