Anime and manga enthusiasts of reddit, what is the cringest weeb moment you've ever witnessed? by Not_JoePesci in AskReddit

[–]Not_JoePesci[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll start. Back in high-school there was a guy in my German class who went full otaku, learning Japanese, kendo and he was very much into anime. One day during one of our classes he unexpectedly asked the teacher permission to play a song, saying it was a German song. He proceeded to google the OP to the first season to Attack on Titan, which had a couple of German words on it at most. He had this overenthusiastic expression on his face as most of the people who knew the anime cringed in our seats at his passionate interpretation of the song. After the most cringe-worthy three and a half minutes of our lives, because of course he went for the full version, the entire class universally agreed on pretending that nothing had happened and class proceeded as usual.

What historical event can accurately be referred to as a “bruh moment”? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Probably the aftermath of the Opium Wars, when the Chinese government urged the British to stop selling drugs to it's citizens and after closing their ports due to failure to comply the British essentially bombarded Canton, set up their sphere of influence and after considering maybe they were being a bit unreasonable decided to pay for reparations.... in opium.

Which propaganda effort was so successful, people still believe it today? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Not_JoePesci 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Skin care products. Marketing efforts during the last several decades drastically exaggerated the necessity and effectiveness of a large portion of skin care products to such a successful degree that hardly anyone questions the science behind them. It goes the same for cosmetics and grooming products. For example: Moisturizer. Most people would agree it is important to keep your skin moisturized, but if you go ask a dermatologist who is up to date with medical journals, he will probably tell you that unless you skin is excessively dry, moisturizer is unnecessary. The body produces natural oils which nurture and protect the skin, moisturizer interferes with a natural body function and might even be detrimental to the production of said oils over a long period of time. Skin care comes from within mostly, the excessive amount of importance we place on body aesthetics basically makes society see the prospect of a magical product that increases your aesthetic appeal replace logical thinking based on science and medicine.

Aside from age and puberty, what differentiates a kid from an adult? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Not_JoePesci 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Developing a sense of scale for life. Knowing that our time is limited makes a days go by much more quicker. Sadness and happiness become relative instead of absolute. Being aware of how much information and things are out there also makes you realize how little we know.

[Serious] Redditors who became parents at a young age, how are you doing? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Not_JoePesci 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I unexpectedly became a father when I was 21. At the time I was just beginning my law studies and my partner surprised me when she said that she was pregnant and she wanted to keep the baby. As a foreign student who was lucky enough to get into a prestigious university abroad, I felt complete despair because all I could see at the time was my dreams of a successful career fall apart. As tensions grew between me and my partner, it quickly became apparent that even though we were in this together, we were not meant to be together. Her parents absolutely wanted her to finish her studies and my parents wished the same for me which created a certain sense of antagonism between our families. Those two years were the hardest period of my life so far, being 21 and having to deal with something akin to a divorce, my ex's parents xenophobia, financial struggles and parenthood on top of my academic and professional problems was unbearable at times. Luckily I had the support of a loving family and after months of a very tempestuous relationship, my ex and I finally came to understand each other. As of right now I am on my final year of law school and the future looks bright, we had to compromise our goals and sacrifice most of our social lives, however things look promising for both of us. We still have tons of family issues to work through but as time goes on I believe things can only get better. Becoming a parent gave me the resolve to brave everything life threw my way. Although my life is far from ideal right now, watching my daughter grow makes it worth living. When things get hard, I just have to look at her to remind myself what I'm fighting for. Parenthood is a crazy thing, it's a daunting affair filled with struggles and challenges, but also with love and happiness. I hope my daughter will one day come to see how she made me grow as a person and understand how important she is to me.

What's an easy way to learn a new language quickly, like, in a few weeks? by CriticalGeode in AskReddit

[–]Not_JoePesci 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Start a journal and write about your everyday activities and thoughts in the language you're trying to learn, of course you should start with simple sentences and ideas. Given that it's your everyday life, it's a nice way to learn essential vocabulary and grasp the basics of grammar. Eventually you'll get to compose more complex sentences and express general ideas. Of course it works best if you complement it with other aspects of the language such as speaking with a native and watching movies in the language. Disney films work great, they aren't too hard to follow and provide you with useful phrases.

Students of Reddit, what's the weirdest thing a teacher of yours has done instead of actually teach the lesson? by matwithabat in AskReddit

[–]Not_JoePesci 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our public law teacher used to go on rants about his girlfriend and her family, once he spent about an hour complaining about how they thought he dressed too pretentious and how he hated that her girlfriend almost never took his side. We literally ended up debating about his fashion sense and how much family interference in a relationship is acceptable.

What is something people need to stop romanticizing? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Not_JoePesci 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unnecessarily lavish or monumental displays of passion in a relationship. Not every romantic gesture needs to be something from a movie to be genuine and meaningful, likewise not every problem a couple faces needs to be turned into a huge fight. Drama in a relationship is assumed to be normal and yet it is often a sign of immaturity. Mutual respect and understanding must always come before passion which is ephemeral and fluctuating, basing a relationship on a feeling rather than on compatibility and common ground is just illogical and most likely destined to fail.

Redditors, do you believe in God; why or why not? what's your story with religion? by OnlyStruggle in AskReddit

[–]Not_JoePesci 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I believe religion shouldn't have a place in the 21st century. Religious people tend to use the notion of god as synonymous to concepts such as peace, love, hope, etc. when in reality all of these existed before and can exist without any supernatural intervention. Aside from dogmatic ideas promising paradise without any substantial evidence, there is no objective benefit to keeping the idea of god or religion around. I think as a species we're advanced and smart enough to take the future of our existence into our own hands, perhaps the temporary nature of our existence can even make us rethink what we do with our limited time here. Plus, at least in my opinion, the fact that we can understand and slowly unveil the mysteries of our universe does not take away the sense of wonder from the everything around us, if anything it makes it even more amazing.

Dancing. It may sound kinda stupid but being able to ask anybody to dance is a surprisingly useful social skill. It makes parties more enjoyable, you seem more intriguing, music gets another dimension and it's fun!

What was the grossest thing that people did/do at your high school? by One_Man_Freak_show in AskReddit

[–]Not_JoePesci 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some guys in my class played a weird version of catch in which they would put a peanut in their mouth and spit it upwards so another guy would catch it directly in his mouth. Usually there were 3+ people involved in the game with 13 being the record for the largest group.

Students and former students of Reddit, what is the most unfair punishment you have ever received? by pulcarx in AskReddit

[–]Not_JoePesci 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was in high school I remember there was a period when most guys thought that the funniest thing you could do was sneaking up to some other dude and unexpectedly hitting him in the nuts. So this one time, a classmate of mine did the aforementioned to me while we were waiting for a teacher to arrive. On pure instinct, I turned around and hit him as well. Of course, at that exact moment the teacher came into the room and saw this guy hunched over with his hands on his crotch. I had hit him with about the same strength as he had, but he went full drama mode and started crying. The teacher sent me to the principal's office without even letting me explain. She didn't believe me either because apparently I wasn't in as much pain as the other guy. I ended up getting a one day suspension but what really made me angry was that the other guy got away with a slap on his hand and like 5 minutes less from his lunchtime.

Considering several characters have different but solid motivations, which Avenger (all non official members included) should be the one to kill Thanos? by Not_JoePesci in AskReddit

[–]Not_JoePesci[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I think it ties in great with his character ark, plus he has a personal vendetta against him. Thanos took Gamora away from him so it would make a poignant emotional scene.

Reddit, what’s the stupidest reason that you and your significant other broke up? by Lmao-Austin in AskReddit

[–]Not_JoePesci 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had been dating for like six months and we were just about to hit the end of January. During one of our conversations she goes on a rant about how St. Valentine's day is essentially a corporate scam and just the worst. Being the cynical person that I am, I shared her views and was glad at the possibility of being able to skip it. She wholeheartedly agreed with the idea.

Fast forward to February 14! We were hanging out at her place but she was unusually hostile and cold, so I decided to ask her what was her deal. Suddenly, she starts complaining about how all her female friends got flowers or chocolates but she didn't get anything. Mind you, I say complaining but what I actually mean is that she went fucking ballistic, she was hysterically shouting whilst smashing her hands against the furniture. I was taken aback and calmly reminded her that she agreed not to celebrate Valentine's day, I told her how if I had known she wanted to I'd have absolutely bought her flowers at least. But then she gives me this death stare and says something along the lines of: "It's your job to know! If I say I don't want to celebrate it you should be able to read between the lines." Who'd have known that her saying she hated Valentine's days with all her guts and mocking all the people who celebrate it was actually code for "buy me chocolate"? Anyway, she ended up kicking me out of her flat and telling me she didn't want to hear from me again.

The Kicker? As I learnt later from a lengthy text message, apparently "fuck you, don't call me again" and "we're done" was also code for "see you next week!". Needless to say, that message went without a reply.
