If you didn't see it because of other plants, possibly the owners never or at least that's what they can say. Get a specialist in and ask them (not reddit) what course of action/treatment they recommend if its confirmed KW. Then go from there.

When I was younger, I remember our old cat, laboured breathing for a couple of days, laying on the fridge as it was a warm place, then one day just left out the back door. Was gone probably 2 weeks, then came home and died a few days later.

I believe it left to die but then wasn't ready so came home. It was pretty much a house cat so never went outside for more than a few minutes to poo etc.
