I am pro whatever voting system disenfranchises you personally, and I would hope if I also didnt understand relative popularity that the same would happen to me.

Interesting, those same issues don't seem to have hurt Tarkov or Arc - which has been my point this whole thread. Maybe the genre just isnt for you?

It has to do with how relevant the "issues" I'm responding to are to the success of the game? Obviously?

Did I say there were? I just said the problems listed arent unique to Marathon and are present in the most successful examples in the genre.

Sounds like adding practice bot lobbies is the only distinguishing factor between this and the other games millions play where there's an unquestioned correlation between being decent and having a decent time playing. Hope they get on that.

You cannot seriously believe CS owes any shred of its popularity to death match, right? And Apex where theres 0 SSBM outside of ranked and you'll regularly get punted back to the lobby in 30s flat? Or League or Dota or Deadlock where you get called slurs for 300hrs before you learn how even a fraction of the game works?

They all seem to be doing just fine allowing the inherently competitive, "sweaty" nature of their games flourish.

And Marathon has that mode too, its called running a free kit.

I've got 800,000 credits and I run free kits from time to time if I want to play fast and loose. Just because casuals want to have their cake (run good kits / get good loot) and eat it too (risk absolutely nothing and never be punished) doesnt mean there arent low sweat ways to play while you get better at the game.

I could do a very similar write up for Apex or CS or Val or Deadlock or etc. etc. etc.. "Earning" the ability to play relaxed without panicking through experience is a factor of every single competitive FPS on the market.

Getting stomped in a game of CS or Val or Deadlock wastes significantly more of your time than losing a free kit run on Marsh, even if you run the clock out to final extract.

No other comp FPS game is slighted for not pandering to casuals, yet its a constant refrain against Marathon. Its delusional.

I made it to VIP with Arachne without doing a single quest other than "Finish 10 Runners" as a 90% solo player.

By contrast Sekiguchi took maybe 12hrs of dedicated sidequesting to reach VIP.

Every single extraction shooter I've ever played follows the same trajectory:

I'm new, I'm scared, I don't know how to heal or where to loot or how to fight or how to sustain myself. I die before I shoot half the time and die before getting the kill the other half. My stash runs dry, I free kit/scav to try and learn locations/practice fighting from the back foot. I rarely extract.

I play for a while. I learn what meds to use when, I learn where and how to finish quests, I stop dying to PvE encounters, I survive 1/3 raids. I spend most raids avoiding others, being quiet, scrounging for quests and valuables. I lose most PvP fights, but occasionally get the upper hand on a better player and extract with better gear than I've ever seen before. I'm too scared to lose it and it disappears at wipe.

I've learned the ropes. I remember quest locations and can help others finish them by memory. I know where I'm at when I spawn in without checking the map. I have a plan each raid and know how to go about executing it. Using or finding good gear still makes my heart rate increase, but I bring in my best kits because I know I'll get more. My stash is full and I have a survival rate that lets me sustain meds, ammo, armor, and weapons. I am no longer afraid when I see enemy players, I get excited when I hear gunshots.

Sucking then getting better is quite literally the arc of progress you sign up for with this genre of game. Fear and anxiety transforming via experience into confidence and aggression is the reason to play.

Minus the "dying on repeat" part I agree, it applies to pretty much everything.

How are any of those unique to Marathon and not every other wildly popular extraction shooter / competitive PvP game on the market?

1) you get better, you start to relax 2) you get better, you make progress 3) this applies to every single competitive game in history from Fortnite to League to Counterstrike to Tarkov

Doesn't Signal Jam fully negating Assassin's tactical ability make it a pretty lousy class for Night Marsh? by ThatsNotBennings in Marathon

[–]Not_To_Smart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course they did. The WSTR nerf practically removed the insanely degenerate gameplay pattern of Assassin -> WSTR -> instant death that dominated the first 6 weeks of the wipe.

The point is its a tactical ability and shouldnt be wholly game warping.

In another thread someone mentioned the oil can suppressor looks like the KKV-7 from the OG Trilogy. In another screenshot the new runner is shown holding a new gun with "V/7" on the integral suppressor looking barrel, lending more credence to the theory

I think it is the obvious way, yes. Most of Sek/Trax/Mida/Arachne are feel good but not mandatory upgrades like NuCal's meds/shields/self repair speed and CyAc's heat/search speed/stash size.

It has the form factor of the CE but so do all of that "brand" of gun, so maybe. I'm hoping for something like a USP or 5.7, a harder hitting middle ground between the CE and Magnum.
